Engine Light and transmission warning

Interesting!

Now at 400 miles...

Had an engine light once early on, like at 50 miles.
Today, engine light AND a transmission warning...before I could completely read it, it went away. It occurred when starting the car.

SO I had somewhere to go and thought, probably a bug in the software... SO I drove it 40 minutes with the engine light. When leaving where I went, started the car and all engine and whatever warning lights are cleared.

SO, I will attempt to get it looked at next weekend.

I'm starting to think that all this stuff, if it were really bad or horrid or whatever, 90% of the new cars out there would be parked on the side of the road waiting for tow trucks.

Years ago, all this stuff was most likely happening...its just now, we can see it.

My mini is in the shop today for an engine light.
Reading that they are having trouble with high pressure fuel pumps...

SO...NOT going to be worrying about this. They still drive fine, and the mini was left at the dealer...so they will fill me in next week.

As for the Fiat, its driving fine, 400 miles into it, has to be a glitch. Hasn't had time to break yet...
Besides, I called them for the first engine light, said drive it and see. Must not be THAT urgent...

Re: Engine Light and transmission warning

I keep getting the ESC light and a 'Hill holder not available' message.

Next time I start the car if I dab the brake pedal the ESC light goes off. Happens about once a week.

It strikes me that the electrics on these 500L's is not shall we say their strongest feature, as ours was also delivered with a non functioning cruise control too.

I'm not going to get it sorted until it goes in for something else or will do if it becomes more frequent.

Re: Engine Light and transmission warning

Yeah, it does seem that the electronics aren't up to par.
I talked to a service manager and they offer to reprogram the main computer. But everything I've read where people have had this done, no changes noticed.

Thus I don't believe that the engine or transmission are having problems. I believe the main diagnotics and sensors aren't synched up correctly. Buggy warning system.

The car has never performed badly during these errors and restarting the car clears them.

I'll call Fiat again today, see if there's any NEW magic lol......

Re: Engine Light and transmission warning

Update:
Called service..they want to see it..
So it goes in Mon.

Seems there have been a few that had blown transmissions right off the truck. Not that this is one, but its happened. SO, at 400 miles and a warning...they get to check it out.

Could be as simple as reflashing the cpu. Whatever it is, they get to do it....

Still running fine...actually seems to be getting better. Shifting and all, must be figuring me out lol

My understanding of the term 're-flashing the CPU' is that it involves removing an reinstalling the CPU software - a bit like removing and reinstalling Windows on your PC - like a fresh start.

I however would expect before they do that to look for any stored fault codes that may lead them to the cause of the error message as (and I'm open to correction on this) doing this will wipe/clear any stored codes in the process.

Doing so should also update it with any minor updates that there have been since the car was built, though as yours is so new this is less likely.

Re: Engine Light and transmission warning

Final update:

Just picked the car up from service.

They found a code for the transmission and engine light and it referred to charge condition.
As they were testing, ALL the dash warning lights came on all at once. XMas tree style!

As it turns out, the batteries are supposed to get a 2 hour charge before you pick up your new car.
For me, I test drove, decided and 2 hours before they closed, I bought the car. No battery charge was done.

The techs charged it up.

The xmission light had them reprogram the xmission computer. It did seem to drive a lot smoother on the way home, highway and side roads, def difference..very nice.

I mentioned that the car was a quart low when I got it home. The service manager took that very seriously. Not acceptable. Seems Fiat may be cutting back on oil? He sent two techs over to the sales lot to check the other 500Ls. They will all be coming to the service garage to get checked.

All in all, the service manager was top notch.
The car is ready for the Boston trip, 12 hours each way... Will break everything in nicely.

Just an update. Maybe it will help someone who needs this info....

Gonna enjoy the hell out of this car

Re: Engine Light and transmission warning

Glad to hear you have a good service team. I just took my first mini trip from Cleveland to North of Detroit on the Canada border. No issues at all in the 550 mile round trip. It was extremely windy and averaged 32mpg(US). I hope you enjoy driving your L as much as I did mine.
