Hi all new to the forum, don’t know if I’m doing this right?! If anyone does see this…. Well, last night driving back from fireworks display a red “check transmission appeared” only owned the car a month never had any problems apart from this, it’s a 65plate 500L popstar multijet semi automatic. So I instantly pulled over and turned off the ignition. Turned it back on to still find the message but the car got us back home with no other issues it drove as normal etc. so this morning I’ve turned on the ignition and it just keeps knocking itself into Neutral. I have checked the transmission fluid it looks full does have a orangey/brown colour don’t know if this is normal, as I know nothing about cars! Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you checked the special hydraulic fluid reservoir stiuated on the top of gearbox?
I also had the same light and it actually was a worn clutch (since replaced at 127000 miles) hope that helps?

Hi, thanks for your reply 👍 so I had it to the garage they said they changed the neutral switch…. All was okay for a few days and the light has come back on, I will put this forward to them when I take it back. Thanks so much

Hello, I've got this same warning on my dashboard display saying to check the manual , but I can't find anything in it about this warning, in fact all it says is that the gearbox is sealed for life and no maintenance is needed. The car is driving perfectly and my OBD2 connector doesn't even see any fault for me to clear in the first place. So frustrating because I'm happy to have it fixed once I know what the problem is , I still say that this is the best car I've ever had though.
Good luck.

First thing to do is check the level of the hydraulic fluid situated in the plastic reservoir bottle which sits on top of the gearbox?
If that is to the max level then it may be a worn clutch? mine was replaced at 27000 miles, what mileage has the vehicle done?

Hi, thanks for reply, yeah same here it’s even been to a Fiat specialist and they couldn’t find any fault codes either but yesterday on the school run was about to pull away and there was a noise of what I can only describe as a hand grenade going off under my car… ffs!! Car was stuck in no gear if that’s even possible lol with my foot on the accelerator the revs where just going up had to push myself to safety and called the rac, they said by the sounds of it it’s not good and could be a blown transmission haven’t heard any news from the garage yet but there’s obviously been something underlying that for some reason wasn’t picked up on!

Oh no, sorry to hear that, please let me know how you get on and what the cause was, I'll have a word with my chap at the garage to see if he's heard of it.

Thanks so much, any info will be greatly appreciated 👍 as soon as I hear from the garage I will give you a message, I’ve tried to Google lol but hit a brick wall with what it could be.

As soon as the weather improves I'm going to have a look under the car to see if the hydraulic fluid container that sits on top of the gearbox needs attention or if I can spot a loose or damaged wire near or around it, my local garage told me they think there are a couple of censors coming from it. I've been to a couple of different garages for a quote for a new clutch just in case, (one of them specialises in transmissions) and they won't touch it because of the difficulties involved , I went to Fiat and they quoted around £2,000.00 for just 6 hours labour plus parts.

Just a little update. Garage have said they’ve got the car moving/driving again, they don’t know what is wrong with it yet, it’s going to a gearbox specialist!

What garage is this..? Village garage..???

The issue is unlikely to be the GEARBOX..

The ROBOT that works the clutch and gearchanges is normally the problem

As I said
Alfaspecialists know all this...

Including checking the BrakeLights Work ...as that is crucial ;)

I've found the hydraulic oil bottle on top of the gear box, but I'm in GB so it is on the passenger side, when I opened the cap, which is very accessible from above, I noticed that the rubber seal was all twisted up, I don't know if that's important but I will try to straighten it out and source some hydraulic oil from somewhere.
Can I use brake fluid or does it have to be a specific oil?

Hi again,

As far as Im aware its Always on top of the gearbox.. so no great difference LH vs RH

Its normally a Specialist Tutela fluid from FIAT group..

But somebody recently stated an over the counter alternative.. (@jackwhoo ..might recall)

Maybe look on OPIE oils website for your car

Its the Selespeed : Duologic fluid :)

(NOT GEARBOX OIL..)

Hi again, e yesterday I picked car up and it has had gearbox oil changed and an update on the ecu? they found a stored error code which was clutch in closed position someone previously mentioned that code would bring the check transmission light on and that they had the same error which turned out to be that apparently it can be bought from eBay delivered from Italy for £300 hope you get sorted soon as I’m driven around the bend 😵‍💫

Sorry it was done at 127,000 miles not 27,000 lol. :)
