So I bought a new cover for my wife's remote nice red genuine.
I also replaced the "buttons" with new with white legends, we've both noticed the remote "works" far better having had to press the lock or unlock button many times to get it to respond.
I can only assume that the new button pad presses the switches far better thus works as expected, so if you think your remotes going on the blink it might just be the rubber buttons, you can buy cheaper but this is the one I bought.

When we got my wife's 500C 18 months ago, the remote operation was very intermittent. I tried a new battery to no avail, so decided the switches had poor contacts. I removed the case and, in the absence of proper contact cleaner, gave the switches a little squirt of WD40, which has worked for me in the past. Wiped off the excess, reassembled it and it's been perfect since.

I was a bit concerned before doing it as I know that WD40 can attack some rubbers and plastics, but figured I had nothing to lose, and all was well!

WD40 only contains kerosene, so it's pretty benign.

Carburettor cleaner (aka Brake Disc cleaner) is the one that's more nasty for plastics, particularly perspex. And avoid de-greaser (Gunk, Jizer etc) on soft rubber. My brake pin bellows expanded to twice their normal size in the stuff... :D
