Hi guys!

I've had a really sad problem with my Fiat 500, I was driving just fine and suddenly I couldn't change gears, so I had to drive the car to the side of the road, and eventually managed to get it in first gear, second and third, but I couldn't change the gears from 3 to 2 etc, I had to push the stick really hard back into first gear and then back up again to drive the car back home. The clutch turned really hard, so it's tough to press in, and now it's been sitting for a day, and I tried to start it and it's stuck in first gear, I have no chance on changing gears as it's budged in first. The engine starts just fine, the clutch hasn't been problematic before or seemed worn out, it happened out of nowhere. There are also no warning lights on the dash. Also before it got stuck like this, I tried to shift gears into reverse, and it just makes this "spinning" noise and wouldn't shift into reverse, but now it won't shift at all. When I start the car it will automatically push forward slowly without me pushing the pedal, but it won't actually drive. I'm not very good with cars, and as I can't drive the car (seemingly) I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem, and maybe had a solution to it, or any idea of what it might be, or if it's going to be costly to fix. The mileage on the car is at about 84k. Any and all inputs/experiences are appreciated! Thank you in advance :)

What happens if you try and move the gear stick without starting the car.

Pushing the stick through the gears with everything switched off ?

The poster states the car is jammed in first whether running or not, not good news ,I suspect a clutch issue originally however forcing the gearbox may have caused permanent damage?

Hi.

It could be the gearchange cables..

The noise in reverse is common of a poor engagement..

Probably cables too

I agree, hence asking about the changing gear with the engine off.

Easy way to check is to manually change through the gears at the gearbox end.

I had this happen on one of my puntos, the cable had kinked and then rusted at that point, the cable didn’t snap fully so was giving some weird feed back when trying to change gears, eventually it snapped completely only allowing selection from second to first as it was the side to side cable that had gone, if it was the fore and aft cable then you could be easily trapped in one gear.
