Hi I bought my fiat 500x 2 weeks ago and tonight I’ve got a warning light - check parking or electronic brake ....what does it mean?

Well it means your handbrake is still applied
Or at least the system think's it is

Do you feel any drag when driving around or do you have to put Extra power down to set off?

If to its possible the switch/sensor for the light isn't working right

I think your car has an electronic parking brake so I should take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out.

Colleague of mine with his new Nissan(few days ago) pulled up applied the electronic hand brake, went to the front door looked round, no car, seconds later bang, car down the street written off and his crumpled , turns out if you're not totally stopped the system does not apply the brake and it just rolled away.

No it seems ok when I’m setting off - it seems to be intermittent because the warning didn’t come on at all yesterday. I’ll take it in and get it looked at.

Yes that’s what I’m worried about - we live on a hill!

I'm not a fan of electronic parking brakes.

If the car has been driven, shall we say, a little vigorously, then the brakes will be quite hot when you stop. As they cool down, the pads & discs shrink slightly, and this can sometimes be enough to cause an electronic handbrake to slip.

With a cable operated system, there's normally enough stretch in the cables under tension to take up any slack caused by the shrinkage when the brakes cool.

Last week, someone managed to park a Boeing 787 at Singapore with the brakes off, and it rolled away backwards whilst unattended...

Yeah, I've got a 500X now, they all come with an electric parking brake. Mine works perfectly, but I have to say they are solving a problem that didn't exist. Putting complex electromechanical equipment in one of the most dirt and corrosion prone areas on the car doesn't seem the best idea, but most manufacturers are doing it now. Good to see that Fiat have at least resisted doing it on the Tipo.

Incidentally Liz, there is a separate 500X forum on this site.
