Well Cinnaminta (Vintage 57 TA) has arrived at Bristol and on is way to dealer to have parking sensors fitted and PDI. (sensors are for SWMBO) paid deposit in early June and told end of July. So its going to be 2nd week of August, but we are away, till almost end of August. Do we have to pay in full before its registered, as obviously we don't now want a 15 reg when in a few weeks we can have a 65 reg, at least without some large ''pre registered'' cash inducement. Not sure how the registration process / quota rationing works. Were told we could 'choose' a reg from a selection.

I've done a few sums in the past, and the likely difference at trade in between a 500 registered on 31st August, and one registered on 1st September, is about £200-£300 (assuming you trade at around 3yrs).

There are a couple of occasions when I've taken delivery of a car before it's been registered (in one case about 8 weeks early) in order to roll it over to a new registration. On both occasions, I had to pay for it in full, but I took delivery (on trade plates) at the time of payment and just kept it in my garage until the first of the month. I wouldn't be comfortable about paying for it before taking delivery.

The garage may reasonably ask you to sign an undertaking not to use it on the public highway until the date of official first registration, and if you collect it very early, you might have to go back to the dealership to pick up the plates. If it's only a week or two early, they shoud be able to allocate you a registration and deliver it with the plates already fitted.

Obviously you need somewhere to keep it off the public highway if you do this, and it needs to be secure as the car most likely won't be insured.

I once had one arrive at the dealership mid-February; the dealer 'phoned to ask if I wanted to register it now, or wait until 1st March; on that occasion, they kept it until I wanted it & didn't charge me until I took delivery.

ah I think you Miss Understood me. Tha dealer has, or will have the car. But by the time its ready, we will be away. We paid the deposit, but no more. We would rather have 65 reg, and collect after 1 sept, but will/ can they register it without our paying, or asking us what number we want. Hate to come back and pick it up on 29 Aug with a 15 plate. Just wonders at what point they registered it, as without payment, we are not yet the owners for the reg doc.

Just tell the dealer (I'd suggest in writing) that you don't want the car registered before 1st September, then pick it up & pay the balance after that date.

It might mess up his monthly/quarterly quota, but that's his problem, not yours.

I'm not sure, and it's easy for someone on a forum to give you advice because it's not them in your shoes.

Thinking about it, I reckon you'll be like we were when we last bought a brand new car. ie very excited and wiling.

If it were me now, I would have paid the deposit like you have, but I would refuse to accept the car if it were not to my liking. What would/could they do?

When we bought our Clio back in 2001 brand new, there were a couple of issues but they promised to fix them at the first (free) service, which they did. I now think that that I should have said, "Sod off, and get us a better one."

We didn't pay the balance of the price until the day we picked her up, so they would have been left with a car that they would have had to make a loss on.

I know it's easy for me here on the end of a computer, but I can only give you advice from my point of view but I'm not on the coal face like you. If you refuse to pick your Vintage 57 up because it's not the correct reg, what are THEY going to do?

You will have to brazen it out and have to wait longer for the right reg one.

Maybe they will listen to reason and give you a 65 plate.

Good luck,
Mick.

It's a difficult one.

If the dealer indicated that the car would be ready at the end of July, then I guess they would be working to a 15 plate deadline. The fact that it is later than planned is perhaps more down to bad luck in terms of the schedule for your car being built. And certainly the fact you are away is no-one's fault either.

I would suggest you call your dealer and explain the situation. If they are any good I am sure they will come up with some sort of deal for you to keep you happy.

No help now, but when I ordered mine I was given a delivery date of end of July initially.

I made it clear at the time that if it rolled past the first few days of August that I would want to wait for the new Reg and I wrote this on the paperwork before signing at the time of paying my deposit. In the end it didn't matter as it actualy came early.

I guess best bet is to speak to your dealer and see what their position is. No point starting a fight just yet. If they are insistent your options are:

*Brazen it out as suggested above, although having waited this long it might not be your first choice.
*Accept the 15 plate and get on with enjoying your car
or (and this is what I would personally do)
*Negotiaite a further discount.

I seem to remember that you have to sign the registration document, so you can always sit on it for a few weeks;-)

We've never signed the reg document at the dealer's place.

We've bought four brand new cars over the years, but the last one was back in 2001 so things may have changed somewhat and my knowledge is old and out of date.

Last car - a Clio - in 2001, Renault taxed her as part of the deal. We bought her on April 27th and I'd "complained" that we'd lose nearly a months tax unless we held off until 1st May. It was explained to me that they had an arrangement with DVLA and can tax a car any time in the month. Basically, we had tax from 27th April 2001 to 31st May 2002. ie more than a year!

I didn't sign the reg document until it arrived through the post.
The only thing we signed was the sale agreement.

Regards,
Mick

Just checked and I was emailed a document which I had to sign and return before FIAT could register my new car last month.

well log book arrived in post yesterday, they'd registered it on 31 July, a week before they had the car . Swmbo was fuming, not only because they didn't tell her, but the reg was ......unnaccetable to her. So we had a big rant, and a hissy fit with the dealer. In the end they offered a personalised reg on a 15 plate, of our choice,up to a certain value . But we spotted something else for the same money.
M155 ... ( her initials). So its now personalised and ageless.
The car is now essentially ready, apart from the number transfer, but we will now be away till end of Aug, so they'll have to store it.

I HATE it when dealers think they can just register someones car to hit the monthly targets without even asking them. When I worked in Sales Admin we had this every month 'Register this, register that' - I asked on numerous occasions 'have you asked Mr or Mrs ??? if they're OK with you registering a car before it's arrived'.

I got looked at like I was off my head, but why the hell should a dealer be getting their commission from the manufacturer for hitting targets when it involves the customer losing a week or more of their warranty?

I left in the end & highly doubt I'll go back to a main dealer. Worked for a few now and except for the small family owned dealers who treat people properly, they all seem pretty void of any regard for the amount of money people are spending, and I don't wanna be a part of that :(

.......... So its now personalised and ageless .......... ..
Trouble is, the ORIGINAL reg number is still there and recorded.

When you come to sell the car, DVLA will revert the car to the original reg number and you take the personalised plate to a future car.

Even if the dealer originally registers with a personalised plate for you, when you come to sell the car, DVLA will issue a "date related" reg number.

There's no getting away with from the original registration date.

Regards,
Mick.

Yes I know, The age thing isn't that much of an issue, but she wouldn't drive around in a car with the reg that it had. She was ADAM ANT!:slayer: Anyhow, had the yaris 15 years, so wont be changing the Fiat any time soon. When we finally get it that is.
