hi all, my wife and i currently have a toyota yaris and are thinking of gettin a new car, she wants a > than 08 diesel yaris and i want a diesel 500, so to help us out, can 4 adults fit in the 500 ok, we have 2 teenage daughters who want a 4 door but i wouldnt mind as long as thay have room,

what should i look out for problem wise in a diesel 500.

btw we live in a remote part of donegal in ireland it will be used for a 40 mile a day round trip to work and back

cheers Gary

i wouldn't want to carry 4 on a regular basis due to head room in rear, try before you buy for sure

Hi,

I bought my 500 twin air to replace a Citroen Picasso as I needed a smaller and more reliable car for work. We tried to convince ourselves that the Fiat would work as a family car but although the front is fine for two adults, trying to squeeze my 19 year old daughter and 18 year old son in the back was nigh on impossible. Other half is well over six foot and has to have the front seat right back and son is nearly as tall. I found the lack of 4 doors frustrating as well. Although we don't very often all go out together now, daughter has her own car and son has his test next month, on the odd occassion we did we found it a problem. We solved the problem by trading my husbands Daewoo Matiz in for a Vauxhall Agila which has now become the family car and the Fiat is mine, all mine!

I will be honest, no. 4 adults will not fit in the fiat in any comfort.
If you want a 'people carrier', buy a VW Golf, or if that is too expensive than a VW Polo will do just fine.

As a 500 owner, I'd agree with all the comments above. We run ours as a second car. You don't say how tall you all are, though - if all four of you are 5'6" or less it would be worth trying.

Get a 4 door car if it's for regular use with a full car - getting in and out of the back of the 500 is a pain in the bum with seat design they have.

Do a really good test drive over say a week and have the passengers in and out of the back a few times a day to test it and see what you think then...

IMO I think it is doable having 4 adults in a 500, but as others have mentioned you will need to try it out yourself. Occasional jaunts with the four of you are fine, but it could well be be a pain in the backside if you were doing it all the time.

Maxi's suggestion of an Evo is a sensible one too; it is a stylish car and it would have a lot more space.

Not sure what your budget/timeframe is for getting a new car, but the new Panda is due out next spring and looks very nice. If you can wait that long then it's another option as well.

However, as we all know on here, your heart may well be set on a 500 whatever. We would understand though!:D

I've had 4 adults in the 500. It's fine for the odd occasion. But I wouldn't want to be doing it often. Whenever I've been in the back of the 500 it's not been a nice experience, my head hits the headliner and if there was an accident I'm quite sure I would be deadened rather well.

Yes I am 1.90 (6ft3) and me sitting in the back is a laugh especially with 4 ppl! With 3 ppl you can get away with it as you can put your legs across the car but still its just not a proper 4 seat car the back is meant to be used like once every now and then for emergencies.

I don't necessarily agree with those saying the 500 isn't suitable for four adults. I'm 6'2" and I can fit comfortably in the back of our 500, even with the front seat in the position I have it for driving. However, this is probably helped by the fact that ours is a 500c so perhaps there's more headroom in the back. Legroom isn't a problem for me though. It's tight but not uncomfortable or cramped.

Only when you have the roof open.

I had a 500 and a Panda 100HP both at the same time - and now both gone.
I always thought the Panda was a much much better car in every respect. More room, better handling, visibilty, 4 doors and a bigger boot. Better value too. If you sit in the back of a 500 there is about 2 inches between your head and whatever might hit you in the event of an accident.
Look beyond the pretty dashboard and it's all a bit disappointing. I've seen Ford knocking out the KA for £6995.

can 4 adults fit in the 500 ok

Not really. It's a 2+2 at best & even manoevuring the odd shopping bag into the rear is a pain in comparison to our Panda.

If you're set on a FIAT, the Panda would probably just about cope with your needs - it'd certainly be much easier to get in & out of - but IMO your wife's idea of a Yaris is probably a better bet. If you're used to Toyota quality, warranty & servicing you'll likely be greatly disappointed with the FIAT equivalents.

The 100hp is the only Fiat that EVO have praised for its handling :) I only drove it for a few months but it was just fantastic, a really little go kart.

My issue with feeling safe in the back of the 500 isn't so much to do with being hit from behind, it's that if someone hits you from the front your head is going to go forward and then (for me) backwards into the rather unforgiving headlining of the car. If we need to go out with more than 2 people in the car we take the Subaru or the other person's car :)
