When I reverse slowly, say exiting a parking space, I occasionally get a whining noise from the back of the car.

Any ideas anyone?

...and no one suggest the kids!

Not being funny, but are you sure it's not the rear window wiper, as it comes on automatically when you've got the windscreen wipers on (on any setting afaik) and you're reversing.

If its was mine I would say it was my missus sitiing in the back !!

Seriously though most boxes will whine in reverse, tends to be more noticeable on a fast reverse rather than a slow reverse.

Try both and if its as above really its normal, if not as above then call your dealer and ask them to take a look. Thats the great thing about owning a newish car the dealer has to look at any issues and even if they cant find anything theres no charge!!

Certainly not wiper, and I doubt fuel pump as it comes from the rear.

I hate my dealer so much, I'd do anything to avoid. Most likely will be lied to a fobbed off!

excuse the idiot (in the video), this was the best video i could find that makes the noise im after. Does it sound like this (when reversing)?

Straight cut gears are always noisier than helical but the whining noise, as stated above, is generally only audible when reversing quite quickly.

Mine makes various noises whilst going about its business, but I never expected it to operate in total silence :D

Grimmy, I love it when you use words with lots of syllables like "helical" and "audible". (shivers) ooh do it again!

"This is normal" (y)

Ah if the fuel pump is under the rear seat then it could be that. Certainly not a gear noise.

Thanks for your help! (Even T14086!)

If its not gear noise and the sound is from the rear of the car then it may be the rear brakes ?
Sometimes brakes groan and squeal when turning the opposite way to normal (ie backwards) they may be they just need a clean.
If nobody else comes up with a better idea I'd get them checked out.
