My 2 week old 500's mileage started flashing today. Have read the stuff about getting it re synchronized. Does anyone know if the same fault could cause the backlights on the heater controls to go off. There are 4 dials and 2 had backlights and 2 didn't , it being new i just assumed this was correct, until they miraculously came on again!! Having had an alfa before with lots of quirky electrical problems I wasn't too concerned. Mind you that did end up with a major electrical failure in flames on the M4 so maybe I should get things sorted!! Hopefully the fiat mechanics will be better than my other garage as their usual answer was if its not happening at the time they can't fix it! Oh well back to spending hours at the dealers.

I had mine in the garage yesterday for them to look at the flashing millage, and they said the same thing. If they can't see it happening at the garage then they won't do anything.
Wasted a whole day

they should have re-aligned it anyway even if its not flashing when you took it in, take it back and if they refuse again contact fiat u.k ( easy enough via the fiat website ) and tell them then go to another dealer.

Mine has stopped ever since I followed the guide in the manual on how to start the car properly. Have you been turning the key to MAR waiting for the lights on the dash to go out and then starting with the clutch depressed?

I had the flashing milage thingy last week for the 2nd time{ive had her since August}and now my heater lights have gone AWOL so there could be something in it.

Cheesey

Do you speak of petrol or diesel version?

My manual says that you don't have to wait for the lights to go out for the petrol version.

My 500 has had the flashing mileage a few times, I wasnt too bothered initially as it stops if you turn the ignition off and on, however after coming here I realise other people have commented -

I've seen posts about proxys? can net? realigning things?

I dont understand what this is but i'm now worried it's a more serious problem than I thought! I had just assumed it was quirky italian build quality...!

any info much appreciated!

I've got the 1.2 petrol. It might not say it in the book actually, I must have read it on here. It seems to have stopped it though. (y)

I think mine had a small leaflet type idiots giude to the 500 with it, in there it says about starting the car. It has "ready to go" printed on the front. It says...

petrol versions:

apply handbrake
gear lever in neutral
push clutch pedal down
rotate the key in AVV position and leave it as soon as engine starts.

diesel versions

apply handbrake
gear lever in neutral
rotate key to MAR and wait til warning lights "glowplugs" and "little lock symbol" turn off
Push clutch pedal down
rotate the key in AVV position and leave it as soon as engine starts.

so only says about glowplug light on diesel, and not at all on petrol... though when starting any car ive had ive always waited until the lights go out before starting, and also doing the clutch pedal in thing.

I have read both the main manual and the quick start guide and neither of them suggests waiting for the lights to go out on a petrol car, waiting for the glowplug light on a diesel is standard on all diesel cars, not just 500s

it basically just says, press the clutch and start as mentioned above.

nottsfiat has a good & valid point, when you jump in and start car the ecu/body computer/cluster/convergence plus the starter are all 'fighting' for voltage from the battery (worse with a cold engine) leaving not alot left for one of the modules/nodes thus it briefly drops out of the CAN network resulting in flashing mileage.
