I have to say that although I love the 500 styling and the overall driving experience I do think refinement and ride quality are less than average judged on 2008 standards for small cars.

your first Fiat Mr Vindaloo?

the noise and lack of refinement are part of what defines Fiat in my book and why cars like the Stilo were such a flop as they were too detached and sanitised...

You guys misunderstand me, I know it's character etc.etc. It's just I'd like to know how the noise could be reduced, so I can enjoy other aspects of the character more. Just turning the radio up isn't an option - I like Radio4 but think John Humphries is loud enough already.

Believe me you can have a little refinement & serenity & still keep the chraracter.

No not my first Fiat, that was in 1966! BTW I said I though it wasn't up to 2008 standards but I didn't say I didn't like it, did I?

195/45 R16s with Bridgestone tyres. Can't say I've ever raised an eyebrow at the noise levels but road surface plays a major part. Beautiful on smooth asphalt but on that crap brown surface they cast the lower part of the m42 on it makes me sick. Been like that whatever car I've been in though.

It's a dinky little fiat, if I wanted refinement I guess I'd have bought a lexus or something...

The only thing that rides that part of the M42 well would be a hovercraft !

So seems like the conti's are a large contributor. I'm going to give the dynamating a go once we get a clear weekend, did this in a Saxo VTR years ago with good effect.

Just spent a few minutes taking out seats etc.

The reason there is so much noise is simply that there is absolutely no sound insulation material under the rear seats, over the rear wheel arches or behind the rear quarter panels. I've only pulled back the carpet from where the rear seat bench joins but there is none under there either!

Looks like a bit more than a couple of rolls of dynamat will be needed

Still going to make a start with what is easily accessible and post back in due course, with a few piccies also.

Cheers

No - don't do it!

Hi Damiano, funny that, I've just changed from a Lexus IS200 to my new 500 (2 days) and high road noise is something I've noticed as did my wife when she took it out the other night.. yup, I know it's a small car, maybe the 16" low profile tyres with Bridgestones, don't help, it is dependent on the road surface, I made sure I opted the Interscope HiFi which helps and I have previously used dynamatt in a BMW to stop panel vibrations.. No motorway driving yet, I'll see how I get on.. Love the car however..

Anything that makes a car more comfortable, quieter, handle better - and is dirt cheap for the manufacturer to do - should be standard...

Better reviews, increased sales, happier customers...win win win.

I actualy like to hear whats going on outside, my mates got an A6 and its so boring as you cant hear anything at all:( Cant beat the sound of a hard working engine. TBH, its our roads and not the 500s fault. In France mine was very quiet.

Anyone ever been down the A419 to Swindon on the standard 15" tyres? There are certain parts of the road where the road noise sounds like children wailing or screaming at different pitches!

Scared the **** out of me when I was driving down there in the dark and pouring rain!
