General I got the flashing mileage today

Hi

I've been reading up a bit on the CAN bus used in the automotive industry and found these links on synchronization:

http://www.softing.com/home/en/indu...bus/resynchronization-1.php?navanchor=3010540

and

http://www.softing.com/home/en/indu...bus/resynchronization-2.php?navanchor=3010541

It suggests that the CAN network has methods of resynchronization so I'm not sure what this proxy alignmnet is doing.

Derek

i dont think the cars alighn them selves

but the proxy alighnment procedure does other things on the can net aswell like for example if you were to replace an air bag ecu it talks to the can net to find out what airbags the car has and lets the dash operate passengers bag isolation, untill it's proxy aligned it will remain inoperative and do nothing and that's just one example of what it does so it's not simply to align the clocks in the end nodes on the can lines

considering the cars come from factory with half the car disabled to avoid batteries going flat
it;s vital to di it on pdi

otherwise all the nodes on the car can get confused as to what one is doing hence flashing mileage

a good example of this is pandas that have a transit fuse i put one in today wile the car was running and immediately as things were activated and started talking on the can net the mileage started flashing this is not due to clocks being unsynchronised but because nodes were talking and confusing others soon as i hit proxy on the examiner it stopped and advised me as to controlers that had been configured corectly

Hi Pip,

A quick question re. flashing mileage: I had it flashing several times and had the proxy alingment done at the dealers but it flashed twice since. I was told the flashing can happen if you turn on the ignition too quickly (before the system has time to prime itself) - is that might be the case? I was told to turn the key to MAR and wait for lights to go off on dash and THEN switch on the engine. Otherwise the CAN gets confused and flashes the mileage in response.

Thanks in advance

Now trying to start the car properly (as suggested somewhere here): MAR postition, then whait for all the lights to go off and THEN switch the engine on.

Is this really the right procedure to start the car?

User's manual doesn't say nothing about it.

How bizarre - we got the flashing mileage on Saturday, also with 199 miles on the clock. Bit of a coincidence..!

Pip - any truth in what Melanabb read (here I think)?

If you ment the thread when I mentioned that the mileage might stop flashing intermitently if I turn the key to MAR and wait to lights to go off, then switch on the engine, yes that is the one. As far as the problem is concerned, I was doing like I said I'm gonna do and it flashed AGAIN yesterday, so it seems like it is not curing it... got no more ideas apart from going back to dealers and demanding another proxy alignement :(
