Linda was going out this morning and tried to start the car, she depressed the clutch as per the handbook instructions [why do you need to do that?] didn't press the throttle, tried about 3 times it wouldn't fire, on the next try she depressed the throttle and it fired up. We thought you didn't need to give it any gas on startup is this correct? any ideas what happened or is it just one of those things :D It just seemed ok when she gave it gas.

The clutch is depressed to reduce the drag of the gearbox when turning the engine over. In the past I had cars which needed various amounts of throttle to start, although most modern cars seem to need no throttle. How many miles has it done?

When I first got my car once or twice I had the same problem. I'm sure I read on here that if you turn the key once and you can hear the fuel pump start and stop once it's stopped try and start it. I've done this since I read about it and the car has never failed to start first time. May be worth a try :D

yeah I normally wait for all the whirrs and clicks to stop before I start the engine. car has performed faultless since day one (y)

Hi, i had the same problem on my Punto HGT 2001.

What i have found helps if you fully push the throttle down while you turn the key and wait for all the clicking, lights and whirring to stop then release the throttle. Then just start it as normal.

Lets me know if it works for you too

the main reason for pressing the clutch is for safety, incase the car has been knocked into gear and you don't realise turn over the car and possibly crash or even better run over the mother in law who is walking infront of the car to get in the passenger side (y)
