Panda (Classic) LVJ the scrap yard 4x4

Introduction

Ok, for those who don't know this is my latest acquisition.

I didn't really expect to win the ebay auction so I didn't view it first.

This will either be amazing or a lesson in how not to buy a car

Still trying to work out how to collect it without it being silly money, If I can get a car trailer for a day my brother has offered to help with his isuzu pickup.

Open to other offers though as he notoriously changes his mind if he gets a better offer for his time (like the pub being open ).
Can't someone cast there eye over (under) it and give you a verdict? Might not be as bad as your expecting?

That will be me, I'm going to collect the ramps off my brother this afternoon.

Body work will be fixed with chequerplate and tiger seal :D

If Im not kept on after christmas I will turn my full attention to it then.

Of course if I'm out of work I'll be skint again and looking to sell one of the cars to fund the work on the other two.

Maybe I'll have a public vote on what gets saved/sold?

I've already been given a 2 month deadline to get rid of either Fizzle/mk3/4x4, mum doesn't know about the Y10 yet ;)

Of course I shan't need the mk3 if I make her walk to the shops

After the back tyre going flat again I decided to put the spare on, it's never been on the car and still has the sticker on it.

The fiat wheel brace wouldn't shift the nuts so after a trip to euro crap arts I'm the owner of a very swish wheel brace which comes apart for storage, a can of plus gas and a huge can of qx brand wd40.

I persuaded the nuts off, put the spare on, the bits of the underside I could see looked ok - especially as it's coated in mud - natures waxoyl surely?

Planning to point the pressure washer at it tomorrow - pictures of what's left of it later......

Oh and despite the head gasket doing an impression of gorgonzola it still starts first time too!

Fell at the first hurdle as I couldn't get it up the ramps ( reversing on). Bloody things just slip away when trying to mount them. I did manage to get one stuck under the rear sill though.

No time to faff about at the moment, I'm thinking of putting it through an MOT to use the fail sheet(s) as a guide to work (or permit to break it).

I did get a quote to have the engine reconditioned - sick squid, add two noughts though, or 1250 if they remove and refit engine themselves.

How much.............mot sounds a good idea

Yeah pricey, been looking at steel seal liquid head gasket fixing liquid (add it to the cold radiator and run for one hour on tick over with heater and fan on full then leave to cool then top up with coolant), might just do the trick to get it safely to the garage and back.

Mind you, that's 30,00 a bottle too!

Just a thought for you to chew on.
I bought my rusty little rosso red friend a year ago and she is still nowhere near being ready for the road, due to me needing to get the funds together to get equiped for welding, plus a multitude of problems with the rest of my "fleet", plus house, plus shortages of money, mother in law passing away etc in the last year.
However, I have started to make my first tentative steps as a home welder and am gaining in confidence, but, and this is the most unexpected benefit, I have found that because I approach working on the Panda from the point of view that it doesn't matter when I finish it, or even if I get it wrong at first, it has meant that I now have the confidence to take on bigger jobs with the cars that I do rely on. Last week for example I changed the radiator on my old E38 BM, which was (for me) a complicated job involving removing the viscous fan, moving oil cooler pipes and do I know what, but I did it and saved myself nearly what it has cost me to get in to welding in just that one job. OK it did take me rather a long time as I was being cautious and didn't want to balls it up. But - I did it.
So the message of today's sermon is have a go!
And by the way, I know how your Mum feels about the scrap yard bit!

I did that with the ramps when I was very much younger, only in my case it was a Mk1 Escort, which of course is rear wheel drive.
I reversed up and kept failing to give it enough beans. So I gave it plenty and succeeded in spinning the ramps halfway under the car, leaving the car see-sawing on the ramps. I think I may have cried.:bang:
I called my big brother to come and help me out with a trolley jack.
When he raised the car, the ramps stayed stuck to the sills (they were a little bit "soft" shall we say.
I got the legendary R-R-Ron Middleton of Rotherham to weld up the sills.
He did it for forty quid - using angle iron:cry:

I had this problem so I bent the bottom angle iron bits at the ends so they dug in when the car started to climb onto them. Or you could drill a few holes and put self tapping screws through. depends on the quality of your driveway though. Mine is ruined by oil spills so not bothered about denting / scratching it

Hope that helps avoid problems in the future!

Best thing is to get a 2,5m long piece of 2,5"x1,5" wood off B&Q, cut it in half put one end against wall etc. stick ramps at the other end of the wood, making sure it does sat fine and reverse one.

What an excellent idea! I could use some of my son's pile of drifting tyres. They would stop the ramps sliding and stop me from having to get volunteers with a death wish to hold the ramps still with their feet with legs extended as far as possible !

Thanks for the advice folks, I've plenty of tyres knocking around so will try that at the weekend.

I was thinking about getting a welder but really don't know where to start with that and still don't know how bad it is yet and wether it's going to be worth the outlay for 1 car.

Y' know this project is a pain in the proverbial before I've even started to look it over.

Mum hates it and wants it off the drive, the garage is too small for it and there's the small matter of a Y10 at Vern's as well.

As I said at the start of the thread I didn't expect to win the auction and I feel it will be better to cut my losses on this.

I just haven't the skills to do the work on it myself and can't afford to pay anyone else to either.

I'll take some pictures at the weekend and post up an add.

Anyone who wants to look it over let me know.

Other wise it will take it's chances on ebay as a whole/ broken for parts.

John, I need to rearrange my garage in to more efficient layout. If i will be able to work out enough room to have work space around Black panda for the sill job, access to sisley engine bay and one more space for temporary jobs. I might consider offering help to your project. Short therm storage+ work needed to have it tested. I still have Micks Aframe, but the transport, parts and some silly labour costs would still apply. Will have a look tomorrow regards extra space and will let you know.
