Hi,

I posted yesterday and now have a much better understanding of the old Uno im driving, but...

It struggles to pull away from stopped in first gear. This after the choke is still out and i have idled the car or driven about 3 kms or so. If it then stalls, which sometimes happens I cannot get it to start again. This has also happened after driving about 15kms or so as well...

Am i doing something wrong? Are there any tricks im supposed to know about?

Use the choke to start and warm for 30 seconds.SLIDING IN SLOWLY over that time.

once a minute has passed it should ifle and pull cleanly..if it doesnt youve got another issue

Pretty sure theres another problem then... the car did stand for about 9 months or so.

It does seem to idle fine and even pull away perfectly fine in reverse. Its just once you change over to first gear it gets all jumpy and stalls. I thought maybe I was overdoing the choke and flooding it... but i tried it differently tonight and it still happened.

I am literally at the point where I am scared to drive the car for fear of getting stuck somewhere again!!! :(

once it's running you can push the choke in completely..

it's worth checking under the bonnet to ensure it's actually opening the flap fully,;)

does the engine temp come up in 5 minutes / 1 mile / 1.5 k of driving..??

The temperature gauge does show the car heating up in or around that time / distance.

The reason why I thought that maybe I was flooding it, is because if it does the jerky thing and dies, i cannot start it again unless the choke is all the way in and i put my foot flat on the accelerator, which is what you would normally do to start a flooded car...

But if im not mistaken, that doesnt make much sense that it would be flooded from just starting, when i believe i have the choke thing working appropriately now, and considering it doesnt struggle to start at all first time round!

you should have something that looks like this on your distributer, take it off and blow through the pipe, if you can hear air coming out then you need to replace it, very very common problem on these cars as i have recently found out, it allows too much air into the carb and makes it run bad

Hi,

I am also female from eastern cape with same car and have had an awful time with the manual choke, I have now resorted to never using the choke and life is much easier, although it does like to stall first thing in the morning or when i leave work in the evening but that i can cope with! You should try it.

Lol, thank you for all the help! I think its entirely possible that it may have been user error here. I seem to have the hang of it mostly now. Still have the occassional random stall and struggle but for the most part i think ive got this! :)
