there are still some little issues, coolant temp is still a little high, brakes are grouching a touch, maybe some more running in, and the alignment is way off, but that will be taken care off tomorrow

Such a relief :) Great news that you passed - shame it cost extra for the retest

I've just finished my work for the month too, been up for 30-odd hours now, so you'll excuse me popping off for a nap, I'm sure

Running temperature - I seem to recall that standard Uno models sit on about 90 (87 degree thermostat), where my Turbo (since fitting its new thermostat eight years ago) runs with the needle on the long thin mark... I just popped out to the garage to check, it's 80 (by counting lines).

However, it quickly rises to 90 when I make use of the turbocharger or when I come to a halt... then settles back down to 80 on a gentle cruise. This kinda says there isn't a huge reserve of cooling capacity (the turbo obviously acts as an exhaust:coolant heat exchanger). If it is really being thrashed, mine gets up to 100.

Hope that helps you decide what to accept.
Make sure the thin hose from the radiator end to the expansion tank is clear - coolant should come out when you pull the hose off the radiator, otherwise, you'll probably have an airlock after changing the thermostat.

Make sure also that the pressure cap holds pressure for an hour or so after you switch the engine off, which proves the system is pressurising properly and won't boil until 120 (safety margin). If not, I suggest investing in a new cap - they don't seem to last forever - especially if there are signs of leaks around the cap, and yes, even a new cap can be faulty, annoyingly.

If all else fails, try a 'water wetter' additive - yes really - there are additives that improve the cooling effect of water. I don't understand quite how they work, but I have seen them work. They can prevent it getting from (say) 90 to 100 in hard use.

it's been a mad few days at work, with no chance of any spannering between shifts, but some thing did need to get sorted before the trip to brooky today, and last night was the only option...after a 12 hour shift, and about 14 hours on the go.....:bang:

so it was back to the facilities at pitstart, up on a ramp and get dirty underneath, with the capable help of jason(y)

that knocking exhaust, just couldn't figure it out, everything was bolted up right, fitted etc, just couldn't see it....dammit:bang::bang: thn we started to work back from the downpipe, undoing and teasing it round see if it could work better, and lo jason spotted it....in doing the arb we figured best way was to drop the exhaust, undo the arb, drop that out and slide new one up, then do up exhaust again. during this the centre sections connection to the back must have come under some twist, broken its paste and clamp seal, and gotten turned a couple of degrees, hence the rear bit before the beam, was twisted out of turn. plus we noticed the position had put the rubber hangers under a lot of strain and they were starting to give out....

down to midnight motors, some new paste, 2 new hangers, back again, take off the centre pipe, clean it up...jason getting intimate with power tools....position it all up properly (wd40 makes a great rubber lube:devil:) paste on, clamp her up, and hey presto, loads of clearance, no knocking, no closeness to the handbrake cable!

while we were under there getting dirty as hell, tightened up the handbrake cable, and solutioned the replacement for the original, crumbling, fuel pipe feed from the tank to the primary filter, 2 years ago, chas and i put a length of fuel pipe in, but as it wasn't pre bent into sharp, was hard to get it to do the tight, immediate 90 degree turn it needs, without a kink, which has got progressively worse. solution? a plastic corner piece, made for carrying fuel/oil etc, 2 pieces of fuel line, 4 clamps, and now is fine, no kinking, solid!

and just for kicks, we put the metal cover plate back on, that goes over the filter and pump, hopefully will provide a little protection.....

so what's left? everything! lol.

alignment was way out, will post up the stats soon, but now she rocks.

finally as promised, the montage video!!!! with appropriate backing vocal stylings from the fabulous pat benatar!!!!

and so the cycle begins again......

since the work was all completed, i hd noticed a bit of a wine from under the bonnet, ok, but at motorway speeds is shaking the wheel like a ****ting dog......:bang::bang::bang:.....is not the engine because is dependent on road not engine speed....so something in the drive from the gearbox out....culprit likely to be something different, something new....the new bloody outer cv! this time, take it in to the garage i usually use, and glynn starts tearing stuff apart...no no the the outer cv...it seems fine, not the hub bearing...that's fine too...wheels weights a little crooked, get that balanced....but not the main cause of the violent vibrations.....whats the drive shaft and inner cv like? i dunno....pull it....so he does, and the there it is as we open it up...christ knows how it has happened, but there a strong burny smell inside the rubber boot, and the ball bearing all look toasted....welcome to hell.........

in the next week, that i booked off, i had planned to:

mot the junior
get wifes panda to garage for new arb bushes, drop links, pads discs
visit cinema

now i can scrub the last, and have a real fight on hands to get tippex back on road for ace next thursday.....
