Lol.
Hadn't noticed that! :D

The polar bear smoking was in reference to the random selection of boxes and packaging my dad has.
I'm sure you could find pictures of anything in it. :D

Yeah, he would have, but I refused.
I can't make him pay for what, originally, was my fault :(

I'm getting a new lamp from Louie anyway :)

Running total:

£60.67 for set of wishbones
£28.50 for new drive shaft, hub nut and first class delivery from LouieBee
£18.28 for a new lamp with first class delivery from LouieBee

Total so far: £107.45

He is :)

If I were a fanboy, I'd say he was my saviour. ;)

It does also help however that he is breaking the exact same model of Uno as mine is :D

Dear Ucof,

I came here to offer my sympathies but I'm sitting here with a smile instead. You have a gr8 sense of humor. Anyway, you'll have a smile back on your face when your Uno is back in shape.

BTW, regarding the "long string of swear words", I could help with some really colourful ones in my native tongue. Imagine the possibilities! You could keep swearing and no one would understand!

Thanks muchly :)
What is your native tongue, and what swear words can you offer? :D

Just got an email from Shop4parts saying that the wishbones have been shipped. They should be here tomorrow, with the drive shaft, and hopefully the headlight. Possibly the clear indicator from my dad too.

Then it is to the garage to get bits fitted so the car is ready for Thursday! :D

rSmall update:

Im currently working 9:15 -> 5:30. I leave my house at about 7:50, am picked up at 8am, and get home at about 6.
The garage, opens at 9, and closes at 5 :(
This results in me not being able to get the bits to them at a time that they are open.

All the bits arrived (drive shaft, 2x wishbones and the replacement headlight) so I had to get the garage to leave my car in their lockable (big gate) car park, and get my partner's sister to take my spare set of keys and the bits for the car with her and leave them in the boot of my car (the gate is big wide, not big tall), so the garage can use my set of keys to get the bits out and repair the car tomorrow.

With any luck, I can get the car back for Friday.

Don't know how much the garage will charge for fitting all the bits though. If it is more than £100, I wonder if it would have been cheaper for me to let them sort it all out. However, the headlight from Louie was not budgeted for, so am happy to over run a little bit.
I also need to remember that the original quote ( £60 ) was just to fix the driveshaft and one wishbone.
Im asking them to do all that, as well as replace the headlight and put the other wishbone on too. :(

WIll obviously let you all know how I get on :)

Woohoo!

Just had the garage call me, everything has been replaced (except the front right wishbone as they said the current one is fine still, so I can use the replacement as a spare!) and they said they'd even changed over the front light free of charge for me as it was "an easy job" - I hope they alligned it properly!

He quoted £60 at me again :)

I'm thinking of giving them an extra £10 for the trouble of having to push the car in and out of the garage, partly for replacing the headlight for me, and generally just for keeping them sweet and on my side.
Is this a good idea, or would you advise against it?

Hoepfully then, the final cost wll come to:

£60.67 for set of wishbones
£28.50 for new drive shaft, hub nut and first class delivery from LouieBee
£18.28 for a new lamp with first class delivery from LouieBee
£60 (£70?) for fitting by the garage

Total - £167.45 (£177.45?)

Expensive, but unfortunatly required :(
Cheaper than the £200 they quoted though :)

Will be picking it up tomorrow morning! :D

Should already be aligned ;)

it's only 4 nuts and 2 electrical plugs to fir and lte alignment is separate (y).

if you give then an extra tenner, give it in cash or they will probs have to pay tax on it. But didn't you say the wishbone that went was the one they supplied and fitted ;).

you could give the extra tenner to me instead (y)

:p

Yes, it was the extra one they fitted, but it was me that bent it ;)

Ah, I thought alignment was done on the positioning of the headlamp unit as a whole, rather than the bulb inside.

If you are lucky Louie, you might find something in your christmas Paypal stocking ;)

LOL @ the stocking. (pair of old socks on their way in the post for me then :bang:)

the MK1 lamps are adjusted by moving the whole unit on it's mounts..

the MK2 lamps are fixed in place and the adjuster moves the lense inside (y)

Car is back on the road :D

Got up, cycled to the garage, paid them £60 +£10 (which he said would go in the coffee machine  ), drove my car home.

There was a small bupbupbupbupbupbupbup noise as I was driving, but I fixed this by going faster. (y)

Everything sees to be done, I have put in the clear indicator as a replacement, and will do the right hand side one tonight as my GF says there is a small parcel waiting for me. I also got the right hand side wishbone back as they said the one that is currently there is fine still.

Rang the insurance company and told them about the clear indicators, they said that this wasn't a problem.

However, the alloys - I told them that they originally came with the car, when I think I meant to say, that they are from the Turbo version of the car. Is this correct? My wheels are froma Mk2 Turbo arent they?
The wheels are from a Mk2 turbo Uno, rather than the standard thin-ass-bastard steelies, right?

Will post pictures of the indicators up tonight.
Its a bit odd with one clear, and one orange one at the moment! :D

Made me think though, is it not a lot easier to someone indicating with the orange ones, rather than the clear ones?

I don't think the clear or orange indicators make any difference functionally-speaking. It's still a 21W bulb and average optics :) It was just one of those many things that FIAT devised over the years - like steering wheel rim thickness and seat material plushness - to differentiate lesser models from more expensive models.

This is always apparent when you discover that the earliest versions - the 70S in the Uno's case - tend to come with things like the clear indicators, Check Control panel and trim later featured on only the top models. FIAT have a knack for 'cheapening' cars after launch, I reckon. Take the Stilo Abarth as an example. Early cars came with EVERY gizmo under the sun, Selespeed, leather, Connect Nav+, standard reverse sensors, deadlocks, rain sensing wipers, even radar cruise control as an option. Later Stilo Abarths came with cloth trim, manual gearbox, basic stereo, etc. I think the idea is you get people used to the idea of buying a car with all the extras, then you sell them one with less. In the case of the Stilo's dubious electrical reliability, less was probably more!

All this started with a grand plan in 1969 to offer a FIAT at every price point from a basic 500 up to a 130 Coupe. The idea of adding and subtracting features really took off in the 80's I think. It meant they could get more price points out of the Uno and effectively make one model suit more differing needs - for many people, the Uno replaced the 128, since the Uno was bigger than the 127 and smaller than the Strada, yet had five doors.

I reckon the best Uno is the basic model, but with a little style improvement as you are doing. I'm pleased you have this incident all fixed now. Perhaps keep an eye on your tyre on that side though, as the bupbupbup noise could be related to that? Wouldn't want the tyre belts to delaminate internally... Maybe try changing it for the spare and see if that stops the noise?

The front wheel does have a few cut lines on the outer rim from where the plastic (or metal) from the bodywork has cut into it during the vehicle being pushed.

I was going to be swapping the wheels over diagonally the weekend anyway to keep the wear even on them.

Forgot to mention that the garage also connected the square nut thing back up for me. Though the damage to the bumper corner is a little worse than I originally thought. Pictures will follow so you can see for yourself, but nothing major though if you aren't looking for it.

I`d be a bit concerned about the bupbupbup noise Ucof, there might be an issue with the driveshaft/hub/bearing/diff/track rod.

You need to get it checked mate.

With the insurance you should say to them they are Fiat Uno alloys off a higher model but are also 13", as soon as you say `turbo` to some of them, they get all parra!

I will get it checked out, after I switch the tyres round tomorrow. That way I can see if it is a wheel problem, or something else.
I only had time to change the indicator over and get my ass to work, I had to shift my shift forward by 30 mins so I had time to get the car and get to work. Here 'til 6 tonight :(

Good idea about the wheels, will ring them back later and say about this.

Pictures as promised!

Damage from the outside. You hardly notice it thankfully unless you know where to look!

Damage from the inside:

small42.jpg

I spent ages trying to leave the RHS headlight in place and only remove the indicator, but after giving up, I found out why I wasn't able to slide it off easily!

small32.jpg

Someone had broken the slats that the indicator sliders fit into, and so it had to be screwed in place to stop it from falling off when taking a sharp left hand corner!

Here you can see the hole that was made.
small33.jpg

This is the damage that was done to the tyre (well, not he only damage done, it is like that the whole way round it) - this tyre is now on the rear right hand corner.

small34.jpg

This is the front left wheel arch after the wheel had been rubbed on it repeatedly. The damage from the tyre came from the sharp looking bottom corner digging into the wheel

small36.jpg

SEXY NEW WISHBONE! (and sexy 2nd hand driveshaft á la LouieBee)

small35.jpg

I decided to get the car up on axle stand so I could have a good look underneath the engine, and see if I could work out what the rubbing noise on the front left hand side was (note - this is NOT the bupbupbupbupbup noise I reported - it is a grinding noise that has been there since I changed the wheels over from their stick thin original steelies to the sexy alloys)

small37.jpg

This is what I believe the culprit to be. At full lock, the end point of the steering rack touches the innermost rim of the wheel, causing a horrible grinding and scraping noise. That small round circle near slightly above the middle of the picture is the bit that it rubs on. I remember a thread a while back after I had posted about this saying that it was the wheel rubbing on the bottom of the gearbox. I can categorically say that this is NOT the case at all. It is the steering rack end arm that causes it!

small38.jpg

This is a better view of the part in question:

small39.jpg

However, I also think that the problem could be made worse by the fact that the tyre rubs on the wishbone at full lock too:

small40.jpg

As you can see, it is jammed up tight.

small41.jpg

That all got sorted. I did however manage to totally bugger up my car jack :(
I was unwinding it (after finishing all the work!) slightly too vigorously and rocked the car off the jack. Thankfully I was nowhere near it, and it just dropped onto the wheels only. Not really that fussed either! I have the spare jack from my old transit van anyway so just chucked the broken one away.

small43.jpg

Clear indicator. Not much more to say really :D

small44.jpg

Both sides done.

small45.jpg

That's about it really!
