Cooling: Water evaporating from radiator cap - tight & in perfect condition, hoses secure and in satisfactory condition ; no trace of leaks elsewhere, temperature shoots up to boiling point...

Ignition timing: Removed distributor (Magnetti Marelli) completely, corrected loose plug connection on ECU/Modulator - factory fitted directly on distributor - replaced and adjusted timing according to Haynes Service Manual - No problems there

Starting: Starter motor seems to "stuck" on turning the ignition key (No noises & battery in good shape)

Any suggestions ?....

Cooling system - sounds like a possible failed head gasket or if you're lucky you just need to replace the radiator cap. If the cooling system isn't sealed properly the boiling point is lowered and the car will overheat. Check your oil (dipstick and oil filler cap). If there's excessive amounts of 'mayo' (a creamy frothy looking amalgamation of oil and water) then your head gasket may have failed and is leaking into the oil system. Are you getting lots of steam coming from the exhaust as well?

Starter motor stuck - possibly worn, jammed or the solenoid is stuck. Are you getting a 'clicking' sound when you turn the ignition key? Any noise at all when you try to start it? Try putting the car in gear and rocking it back and forwards as that may free it it. You could also try giving it a gentle whack as that may free off the pinion or solenoid. Also make sure that battery is in good condition as a flat battery may struggle to turn the starter motor.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response & advice:

Checked coolant level & oil dipstick, no indication that the head gasket is "blown" ; solenoid on starter motor ok (conclusion - ringgear badly worn on flywheel) Battery - good.

Lastley, yes - eccessive steam from the exhaust on starting and idling.

I am having problems with my punto ? and i think its something to do with the coolant as it s brown-ish. But is intersting reading yours :p

......and finally a week later the uno overheats and pop goes the head gasket. "moneys' too tight to mention" - simply red

Engine flushed; radiator flushed; new head gasket fitted; timing belt renewed... On starting the Uno I can hear the "tappets/shims" being noisy. One of the threads is stripped on the cam shaft housing (bolted to the cylinder head) - Locktite thread repair perhaps ?
