Hi, I’d settled on a pre-reg Tipo 1.6 multijet after seeing some great deals in the last few weeks. I saw one which looked nice and put down a holding deposit. I noticed a dpf regen light was on in the advert pic and queried with the dealer and he assured me it wasn’t a problem but would be checked. So I go there today, a 4hr trek to go there, only to find the car not prepped. I hang around for 40mins or so and finally get to go out in it with a salesman. I immediate notice a couple of warning lights. An A with a arrowedcircle and the engine management light. But what struck me was it was utterly gutless. I was gutted. The dealer just dismissed it saying it would be checked over before it went out and would I like to finalise the deal! I believe the ‘A’ warning is the stop/start disabled warning and I suspect the utter lack of go is the car going into limp home mode and hence the engine management light. But what on earth could trigger this on s brand new car, albeit one registered a few months ago?! Many thanks for your thoughts everyone!

The A with a circle round it is the Start/Stop disabled as you guessed. No problems there as that's switched on & off via a button next to the hazard warning lights. However the engine warning light and it being gutless is a big concern on a car that's essentially brand new. It's probably happened because the car has been unable to complete several DPF regens but given how many pre-reg Tipo's are out there and how few & far between problems are, I'd go elsewhere. Particularly as the dealer didn't bother to prep the car despite knowing you were going. Saying it'd be checked before going out isn't good enough - it should've been right today, given you told them you were going (n) Both the 1.6 Multijet and Tipo in general seem reliable so you've no need to settle for something which is already displaying problems.

Many thanks, I really appreciate the quick answer. The dealer group has another available, albeit at a different site, at the same price so I think I need to look at that. Perhaps they’re so cheap for a reason!

Dealer has now come back apologising profusely saying the car was still in ‘shipping mode’ which vastly reduces power. It’s now been sorted and all good to go. He made reference to the H that was showing in the dash. Plausible?

I wouldn’t have thought the “H” had anything to do with the lack of power. It’s only shows to reset the delivery miles to zero which disappears at 200kmh if not reset. Sounds more like a lead etc not connected etc....

Having read the other thread on the H symbol I suspect it’s completely unrelated and, worryingly, having googled I can’t find anything re ‘shipping mode’ that new cars are configured as out of the factory. Even though I’ve given a holding deposit, and there are no others around at this price, im tempted to walk away. ?

If the car is OK when you pick it up, and has a full warranty then there should not be any issue. If you are still worried it would not be unreasonable to put in writing (or email) that if the fault recurrs, i.e warning light or poor performance, within 2 weeks of you collecting the car you reserve the right to reject it and get a full refund. After the two weeks it would be a normal warranty claim. If they are happy they have fixed it there should be no problem with them agreeing to this.

If you go for the car you tried, ask them to change the oil, if its been switched off during a regen the oil maybe contaminated.

The manual says that if the regen light is on you must not turn off until its gone out and keep the revs up. It takes around 10 minutes.

The light does not come on at every regen, only if it detects driving conditions warrant it.

My Tipo is a pre-reg 1.6 MultiJet and its been fine, as said above, they're reliable, the drive train is tried and tested

The H next to your mileage reading is there so the salesman can reset the mileage to zero on a new car. Only stays on until around 125miles! The engine light comes on mainly for emission issues. The stop start automatically turns itself off when the engine light comes on. The dpf is the obvious problem and on such a low mileage car I would want it looked at under warranty. The car may have been turned of and on and moved around the yard alot causing this problem or it could be a dodgy dpf.
