Hi chaps,

Just thought i would post the consequences of getting the timing wrong when fitting a cambelt.

I thought i was saving money by not asking my regular garage to do it my car has done 65k so i was panicking so, creme da la creme, everyones praising how good he is i let my gf brother do it for me (an apprentice at toyota dealer)apparenty he had done loads of cambelts on supras, lexus, mr2s you name it!

The result:
8 bent valves and and to repair the damage a grand total of £445.33 :( and to top that off i have just bought a house, first time buyer struggled my ******** off to get on the housing ladder.

So its fair to say my car will ALWAYS go to the garage no matter how big or small the job is.

If that isnt bad enough to add to all that the arguments between me and my gf about who should pay really are still on going, wasnt going to get it repaired but its not worth much as it is and its even less as a non runner so will run it for another 12 months and part exchange it me thinks.

Do you think i am wrong in thinking that her bro should contribute to the bill if not pay for it all?

IMO - refund all that he took and buy new parts for the engine.

I never paid him, because once he fitted new belt he couldnt get it running so i had to have it towed to the garage i should have used in the first place and there bill to repair it is £445.33 does that seem about right if theres 8 bent valves?

Did he not turn the engine by hand first? Sounds like a bit of a numpty to me.

Either way, he fooked up.

After firing questions at him he said he only turned it by hand 180 degrees by hand, and never had a cam locking tool either.reason im so mad is i offered him write up off forum etc and he said nah ill be fine!

The valves are about £6 per valve and the set of garkets needed about £60. Dont know what is whit the pistons :( in your case, but can say the labour in my country for replacing the valves is around £100.

Sven

so the majority is labour as always, painful painful lesson to learn, i hope i runs better after this, need new oil and antifreeze too apparentley!

New oil is standard when such work is involved and antifreeze also. They have to drain bouth out - they should

sven

they will drain it! The most sickening thing of the whole experience as a regular customer he would have done the belt for £50+VAT!

As he rightly pointed out i never rung and asked!!!

Well just thought i would post up that after 3 weeks in which my local garage struggled after the tragedy of having 8 valves bent, its all repaired and running better than EVER before :) if feels smoother, nippier and flats spots are less prominenr, and i can accelerate up hills!

Only because he is in northampton and im in walsall, fair to say our relationship is somewhat strained now and there has been a few words texted back and forth:)

its gotta be worth the journey just to supprise him and see his face when you knock on his door ;)
just had mine back myself after a new engine being dropped in, purring like a tiger now :)
