Just had broadband fitted, cant believe the difference in speed! no longer will it take me ages to look at the great pics on here!!! why dont they install broadband as standard on pcs now cos its obviously a much better service? (y) :D

yeh broaband rules, and they are introducing 8mb soon. Bt are also upgrading (as are ntl) to give customers the fastest speed thier line can handle for free (dont think ntl is free unless your a new customer)
Just waiting for mine to go up to 2mb then see if it will go any higher!

i am with telewest and asked for 1mb but they give me 2mb for same price and they knocked off a fiver for the firdt three months so will pay £19.99 for first three months then £24.99 there after! (y)

Installed as standard? How exactly? Most PCs come with LAN connections anyway, and even if they threw in an ADSL/cable modem, you still need the exchange to be turned on.

Your broadband is dependent on local ISPs and phone company - it will never be a free service in this country for some time to come.

I have been on 1Meg pipex for about a year - will deffo shop around once contract up - 2Meg sounds promising :D

I'm with Ntl and at the end of last year they upgraded our 600k line to 750k for free which is brill. Fast enough for anything we ever need and we run 3 computers off it. I used dial-up a few months back at my parents and it made me really impatient and fustrated. Broadband 500k is definately the lowest realistic standard that people want IMO nowdays. Dial-up is near enough obselete.

Dial-up will never be obsolete, £2k a month (or something around that) is too high a price to pay for a satellite connection in a rural area. I'm not that far (about 6 miles I think) from the nearest exchange, but far enough to make broadband pointless here - it's little faster than dial-up. If everyone is to get broadband, the comms companies are going to have to come up with far better ideas that don't exclude a good proportion of the people in the country/ world.

Make a cycle track on the way ;)

Broadband? Ha, try my uncapped, unmetered 8Mbit connection....;) £120/year.

bt will be doing 18mbit+ to something close to 28mbit by year end, that will be available to home users (not business only)

just a little inside info from me :)

have to be around 1mile or under from your exchange to see speeds like that though so guys over will be bound to ADSL while others can enjoy ADSL2+ standard.

and with the margin squeeze in, bt will have to make this affordable to people, so no 25mbit for 400 quid or something stupid.

Helz, it actually extends the reach of the ADSL service. ADSL 2 can come in a guise called RE ADSL 2 - reach extended ADSL 2. Sure you can do a search and find exact details but it should mean 512 is available up to 7km IIRC.

for people out of the adsl2+ technology, they will be usinging existing adsl technology to increase to the maximum speed your line can handle, its called sync adaptive.

everytime you reboot your router or switch on your pc (usb modem pci modem and wireless etc) your modem will try to sync to the exchange at the max your line can handle up to a speed of 8mbit down, depending on your line, if will change or stay the same but it will be up to the user to select the speed, not ISP. So in other words you are in control but it will not sync to a speed your line cannot handle.

Now, bts limits on speed at the moment are pritty high, for people out on extended reach 512kb rate adaptive service, bt might be installing ''mini dslams closer to a large batch of properties (making it shorter to reach an adsl exchange as it will be running on pure fibre optics) so you will most likely be able to achieve 8mbit in most places.

just note, its taken bt a fair few years to roll out adsl to 95% of the uk population so this will be a lengthy process.

also bt are trailing fiber to the home at the moment (fiber optic networks) with a few select customers at a rough speed of 54mbit. Fiber to the home is however available to handle a smooth 100mbit sec, same as most slow local networks.

hope this helps

might want to give this a try if you live to far from an exchange I saw it advertised in the daily mail the other day im gonna give it a go-

www.onspeed.com

for £24 a year the say they can make you dial run approx 300Kpbs

lots of reputable computer mags seem to agree and they offer a 14 day money back garauntee so must be worth a shot.....
