Recently bought a printer to work wirelessly on my network, since putting it on the network I've been having problems with the network crashing. Could a printer being turned on cause a network to crash?? Doesn't seem possible to me but I'm not an IT guy. The router for the network is 10 years old, could it be too much for the old router to handle?

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

It shouldn't do mate unless it's constantly scanning the network for packets being sent to it instead of just waiting to recieve them. There are odd occasions of this. Best thing to do is turn the printer off and see if that cures it. If it does then it means we need to look at the printer setings to see what it's doing.

It could be the router but i've seen the same thing on non wireless networks too and newer kit so changing the router may not fix it...might be worth seeing if you can get a new one out of your ISP though? ;)

Also depending on if your using static or dynamic IP adressing make sure you don't have the printer trying to share the same IP Adress as another machine.

Got to be the printer, as soon as you turn it on the network crashes, leave it off and the network is fine. I'll have a look at the printer settings.

I know this is going to sound stupid but you haven't got the printer plugged into the LAN port and on the wireless have you? because that would create a loop and do the same thing. Otherwise it could be on the same IP as another device just like JayZone said (y)

I took all your advice, I looked at everything and I couldn't work out why it kept crashing the network. I called in an expert IT guy, he couldn't work it out either ! Decided to take the printer back to the shop for a refund, still want a wireless printer, I suspect but I'm not sure, that I need a new router.

Thanks
