Insurance companies decide to not treat winter tyres as some heinous modification.
Not if you fit them within manufacturers specs

I know. I'm checking them daily ATM and its making for interesting results. Hey ho, sister will have to make do with a pair of snowtrac's and a pair of regular all season M+S that I've got this winter.
Remember there are quite a few sites selling winter tyres now
Put "175/65 R14 Vredestein snowtrac" into google and pretty much all the sites selling them in the UK will come up. Obviously if you're after a different size or brand then change those details.

As shown in the latest Autoexpress and EVO reviews (both are worth a read), if you need winter tyres and want to use them in all conditions through the winter, it really is worth spending some money and getting something decent.
Don't forget the European web sites.
I got my Caravelle tyres from Oponeo (sent from Poland free post)

Thanks for those links, very competitive prices. Reassuring to hear that they were good, so may give them a go in a couple of months time.
To be honest, I think you may have missed the boat in regard to getting the best price for this winter.
The tyre i needed for my Caravelle was £104 each. I ordered, and the next day they were £140 odd, then they went up further eventually over £200, now they don't even list them.
They must be pushing prices up as stock gets low until they sell out. Just like a budget airline. Desperate people will pay desperate prices.
If you wait until the snow is on the ground, you will be left out in the cold(BOOM BOOM, I'm here all week, try the chicken in a basket!!)

Completely pointless to buy them then. We're not going to see any snow in the near future, but once it hits there will be little or no snow.
Tbh I don't agree with deeyup, there are plenty of good tyres about fairly cheap, but you needed to be buying a month or two ago to get cheap cheap winter tyres.

The prices have gone up a little on most tyres and on a few they've gone up quite a bit. But mostly they've just gone up a few pounds. There's a guy in the 500 winter tyre thread who keeps on searching for a cheap option and hasn't placed an order. I just know that he's going to end up paying premium tyre prices for crap tyres but you can't tell some people
I'm just going on my own example with the Caravelle tyres.
I bought Nokian. They have disappeared from mytyres too in my size.
Dont mean to scaremonger.
Camskill are still listing good prices on the the panda sizes, but they are still showing no stock/delivery date on most winter tyres in 165/65/14
but these are a good alternative at a great price.

BTW, anyone looking on ebay at part worn, bear this in mind. Winter tyres loose they're effectiveness on snow (maybe ice too??) when less than 4mm.
The used tyre dealers won't mention this, they just harp on about legal limits of 1.6mm and a 5mm tyre being less than 50% worn.
I suppose if we don't get snow they may be okay, but I think false economy as they mostly want a fortune for them anyway by the time you've paid post and local fitting.

Couldn't agree more. The sipes on a winter tyre are gone at 3 or 4mm anyway so they're more or less useless on snow and ice then. Tbh when my winter tyres get to that stage I'm just going to run them through the summer till they're worn out, Continental's recommendation is that if you're on a budget you run winter tyres all year round. Whilst they will wear quickly, you're not going to get stuck going up a hill on a particularly warm, sunny, dry day now are you? Someone on the 500 winter tyre thread made it sound like winter tyres were horrendous in the summer and that I had a death wish if I finished the life of my winter tyres off in this manner. I just don't see the point in getting rid at 3 or 4mm when a tyre still has some life to give

I had a set of winter tyres on me celica gt4 in the late 80's. Whilst the squirmed around a bit compared to when I put new summers on they were not anyway near unusable. In fact on that car they added to the fun.
