General  Winter Tyres (Again)

General  Winter Tyres (Again)

also tyres are not designed to be repeatedly fitted and removed

Not to mention used, removed, stored, re-fitted. I've often wondered what is the lifespan of a tyre?
I just stick to whatever tyres I have on (ATM they're kumho ?) & I'll be carrying my snowsocks in the boot. Used them each year for 4 years now & still good to go (although now showing signs of fraying), not bad for about £40-odd.

Not to mention used, removed, stored, re-fitted.

Suppose it boils down to storage conditions... Leave a tyre in the baking sun exposed to weather for a couple of years its going to be degraded....

Leave them stored in a cool dry dark place Cleaned before storage on a tyre tree and dressed with a proprietary tyre dressing to "seal" the rubber they should last a fair while ..

Ah right I know what you mean. I was going by the price I got a single Stilo rim for off of eBay, £10 plus £10 p&p. Was over a year ago mind.

Is your spare not just a space saver tyre on a full size rim or is it a space saver rim also?

All spacesaver... That's why I'm looking the full sized steel wheel.

I got a set of 4 used steelies off ebay for a tenner locally and a set of Sava Eskimo S2 high silica tyres for £34 each delivered from Germany. I could have got slightly better tyres and worse ones too but felt the Eskimos offered a good performance (particularly in snow) according to tyretest.com for the money. It took me all of an hour to make a tyre changer from metal I had kicking about so all I now need is them balancing. I note that the price is now higher and expect it to get higher still as winter gets nearer so if you intend to buy do it sooner rather than later.

If anyone has a set of steel wheels for a Panda it would be most appreciated as Fiat said they are £100 each brand new not including a tyre:eek:

The wife has just bought a new fiat panda and where we live we need winter/snow tyres

I have some steel wheels which would fit a Panda.

Has anyone seen the wheels that places like MyTyres supply?

A wheel for your Panda fitted with a decent winter tyre costs about £70.

Dunno if the insurance co would get uppity with a non-OE wheel even though it's not a fat alloy.

Where are you looking. Ive just brought a set of 4 new panda alloys with tyres for £200 (and the answers no before you ask lol) so there are wheels out there. Just a matter of looking ;)

How do you know the steel wheel is not oe?

How do you know it even matters? :p

Steel wheel is a steel wheel is a steel wheel. If they're going to charge extra because it's different they might as well charge you when you put in a different brand of petrol

Or different tyres. Actually, that would kind of make sense. Insurance wanting an extra £100 when you chuck a set of linglongs on.
Still. Scrub that. Let's not give them any ideas

Jon

Where can you get me a steely for £20? ;)
Have a ring around the local scrapy's smurf. Theres one on the upper braniel road (i think? I get all those roads mixed up!) was going to do me a 13" for a tenner to fit a panda as we thought my squeaking could have been the wheel as it was the one I had the 80mph blow out on but it was just kwik fits dodgy break fitting. Also, im pretty sure somewhere like gilnahirk tyres would do one quite cheap with a tyre (not ideal I know).

EDIT: Just had a thought, theres bound to be some Seicentos or Cinquicento's being broken somewhere - if theres any left that haven't alloys fitted. AFAIK the wheels should be the same?

I'd say there'd be very few Sei / Cinq wheels around here that aren't alloys. I think the eight-spoke alloys I have on Dez were originally intended for a Sei but I preferred them to the six-spoke Panda ones, when I was in the showroom buying the car, so I put them on my to buy list.

I'll look up the Upper Braniel Road. That's on the way up to Hillmount. Been up there a few times to the garden centre.

And I wouldn't use Kwikfit for anything. They're the ones who had put the exhaust on the Saab before V bought it. They didn't quite do that right and it hung so low that you couldn't go over bumps without rubbing the ground...

I know all about Kwik Fit - it was a moment of weakness!! Mind you the guys at Bangor seem decent enough but I got mine done on N'Nards Road. From what I can gather he's where the steam wash is. Will try find the phone number of the place.

I'd be quite happy with that as long as I got a reduction for using good summer tyres and using winter tyres too.
