windows recovery

windows recovery

Within IE, look at Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced...

Not sure what Enable Intregated Windows Authentication does, but worth a shot....

I use a valid XP licence (y)

That's be Windows Genuine Advantage. The "advantage" is that they haven't disabled your ability to download updates. So it's not really ad advantage. Good old Microsoft! :D

Let's fix your computer mate:

Put the Windows XP CD inside the drive and press any key to boot from CD.

When you get to the 1st stage of choosing:

Install Windows
Use Recovery Console
Exit

Choose Install Windows because fook knows what the recovery console is useful for other then copying files etc.

Install windows as you would normally. Make sure you read all the instructions carefully, eventually (BEFORE ACTUALL INSTALLATION) you should have the option of Repairing a Windows Installation.

Good Luck!

On the subjuect of windows updates and dodgy copies of windows, it depends on what CD KEY you use to install windows with. A few regularly used CD Keys were Black Listed and disabled the use of the Windows Update feature.

Yes, that's how I got mine going again, I've now deleted everything off the first HD and am running Windows from the second one.

ok, thanks, will do it when i get home
cheers

you could press F8 and run the computer in last known good configuration if possible

Do what Trancendental said. I've never used recovery console myself, couldnt understand it.

Also try going into safe mode, Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Restore it to a date in which it was working fine before you had any problems.
Dont know how well this works as i've never tried it myself.

If my earlier advice should fail and for some reason the installation fails half way through more then once then you most likely have a hardware problem.

Open up the box and make sure all electrical contacts are clean and connected flush.

Try Re-Installing again.

Should that fail, try a fresh installation in a different directory/folder.

If that fails you can back up all your content by plugging the drive into a mates working computer.

Then you can format your Hard Disk as what appears to be a Hardware fault might be a virus.

If you do get the OS up and running back up all your Hard Disk contents as a precatution as it is not likely your machine will last long if it keeps resetting and crashing aas result of a hardware failure.

again, have fun and good luck (y)

ive done what you said, using the repair install. it all worked fine and i got a message saying it was sucessfull, windows then restarted, got past the windows xp flash screen, then a blue screen appears(like the xp scan disk one, with the windows logo in the top corner) and a message appears that says "setup is restarted...." and the screen goes blank and nothing happens.

How long did you wait before nothing happened? sometimes the Hard Drive will chugg over for a while before any activity takes place.

Sounds long but retry the install, same method as the first time.

If the same Halt occurs turn off the computer then unplug all un-necessary hardware.

Modem
Network Card
Sound Card
Extra CD Roms
Extra Hard Disks

Turn on the computer and see what happens, If it starts then one of your hardware devices is causing a problem.

If it doesn't then you might have to Format the Hard disk. WARNING: Formatting your disk will lose you everything.

Try plugging in the hard drive to a working computer to back up anything you do not want to lose, like your 10Gigs of MP3's :D

THINK BACK!
what did you install last before your computer went crazy?
what program or peice of software did you you last?
What did you download last and where did you get it from?

If you do remember any of the above then this may be what is causing your problem, problems like these usually occur when you install new device drivers or install new hardware.

It may be a simple case of having to Flash your BIOS. This happened to me when I bought more RAM and my computer simply said no, I didn't understand and thoguht the module was broken because my computer was great and should be able to cope with a GIG of RAM.

Flashing the BIOS resolved the issue.

You can do this without going into Windows. Download the file from another computer and follow the instructions carefully. If you mess up a Flash of the the BIOS you may need to buy a new mother board.

Most Flashes involve you using a boot disk and doing the flash from a DOS or DOS emulated Prompt (looks like the Recovery Console)

Good Luck!

what a saga of a thread lol!

couldnt you just have done a chkdisk with the XP disk you had? tbh it seemed like a memory problem to me... if not memory deffo hardware related. if you havent installed anything (hardware) i would change the memory or take it out blow out crap from the slot then place in a different slot.... and now its properly fooked you will need to re-install :p again lol

If it's brakes on the car, we all say, get a professional to sort it....

When it comes to computers... everyone has an idea....

My advice, get someone round who knows what they are doing.... Sorted. Don't take it to PC World tho... The IT equivilant of Kwik Fit !!!:slayer:

If I could do cars like I do PC's then I would have re-mapped it myself by now !!

Salad Fingers is a legend !!! 6th episode lost the plot though.....
