windows recovery

I think we need a bit more background. How old is it? Where did you buy it from? etc..

Didn't it come with any CD's? If not you may need to restore from an image stored in a hidden part of your hard drive. This will most likely lose any work stored. Hope you have backups or someone who can copy your files off the hard drive.

why dont you tell us what the problem is you are having?

i need to repair a windows xp pro installation.
when i start my pc up, it gets bast the bios flash screen and just before it reaches the windows xp screen the pc re-boots its self,
i have inserted the xp pro cd, and have selected the recovery console, to try and repair it but i dont know what to do, lol
thanks guys

well the recovery cd will do no more than the install cd.recovery cd's as mentioned work with a partition on the hard drive.
there are various options in the console you can use which you can find with a bit of googleing but when i have those sort of probs i generally do a clean install as my expertise isnt that good.
the IT guys here may be of more help

F8 at startup.. just keep pressing it. Choose safemode and check that you havn't installed anything recently.

ive dont that pressed f8 and selected safe mode, it loads up all the file names eg, c:\windows32\drivers and then the pc re-boots it self and i have the same problem

Check for loose components and that your PSU is delivering enough power.

Other than that reformat. Some windows problems are just too complicated.

could it be that some boot file is missing and would i be able to find out if it is by using the recovery console?

just checked all the voltages there all fine and so are all the connections

If you buy a copy you will not be able to download the crucial XP updates (trust me I found this out:eek: ) anyway i'm no expert on PC's but I have had similar troubles like this, once was the RAM which I cleaned the contacts the other was a hard drive power cable loose,in both circumstances XP never booted up & used to restart sometimes but only somtimes. In the end I just got a new PC,need my daily fix of ebay & FF:rolleyes:

some copies of xp pro still allow access to the windows update service, allegedly ;)

You need a Windows XP CD. You then have the option of reinstalling over the top, or trying to use the recovery console, or repairing your current installation.
Good luck with that (y)

Mine used to but now you have to download this 'active X' thing before you can download updates & it came up saying this version of windows is a copy or words to that effect.Maybe it was just the version/copy I had, dunno?
