Hi all, I’m changing 5th gear synchro on my 1999 Ducato Hymer 2.8jtd gearbox next week. Waiting on part from England . I’ve read and watch lots. Advice is full 2.7litres of gear oil through the 12mm breather opening. But now I’ve been told to put the 700ml through the reverse switch opening instead ???? Any thoughts .. surely it goes into the one casing no??

A 1999 vehicle will not be a 2.8JTD, it will most probably be an x230 2,8idTD. This will have a different gearbox to that on later 2.8JTD models.

Yes the oil goes into the same place. Is it possible that the reversie light switch hole is being suggested for level checking?

Thanks for the reply .. so am I right in saying fill in up through the breather hole? Some are saying that because the 5th gear casing only gets splashed with oil , that one should put the extra 700ml in through the reverse switch opening to ensure it has oil in and around the synchro gear..? Also where would I check the engine type I have in it? I had to give the VIN number only to supplier in England for a new 5 th gear ?

The 2.8JTD was introduced in 2000, and possibly due to conversion delays, may not have appeared in some MHs until 2001.
The 2.8idTD has mechanical injection with a distributor pump on the vehicle RH front of the engine. You should be able to see the injection pipes connecting to the injectors.

The 2.8JTD has electronic injection with the ECU located on the inside of the LH wing.

Further the 2.8idTD is designated 8140.43, whereas the JTD is a 8140.43s. My vehicle has this engine type number on a paper label attached to the engine cover.

God that’s great thank you for this information.. learning all the time about these MH and chassis eh 👍

Fifth gear lubrication is splash lubricatio. I try to follow advice given on outandaboutlive, to not angage 5th gear for the first mile or two, hence giving time for the oil to reach the fifth gear assembly.
The splash lubrication is OK for vehicles in daily use, but MHs tend to spend longer periods without moving. This allows the oil to drain out of the 5th gear housing into the main box.
