Technical whining noise

Hi, my barchetta is a '99 limited edition and it makes a horrible whining noise.
Any suggestions what it could be? Thanks!

it could be the variator. The device that regulates the variable valve cam timing. Check out the "Might be getting one" thread, there is a link to the Barchetta owners club where you can find information on this, it seems its quite a common, and easily (if you take it to a garage) solveable issue.

If it sounds Deisel like then it's the variator.

Could also be down to air intake issues.

Any performance losses?
Any engine changes made by yourself?

check powersteering belts/fluids, this may also cause excessive whining when you turn the wheel, powersteeting whines anyway though.

If its interior and sounds like its behind you then it could be the petrol pump...got that on mine
