My Multipla has been great - 45k miles of trouble-free motoring apart from a leaking sunroof.

However recently it has started a rather annoying whine that would appear to be the clutch withdrawl bearing. The sound is worse if I ride the clutch and in lower gears but more or less disappears at speed in 5th.

I took it to Caledonia Fiat and the foreman drove it round and suggested it was the tensioner(s) on one of the fan belts or even the camshaft drive belt. I realise that there is a maintenance issue at about 48k miles on camshaft belts but I am not confident that this is right. Before I get some work done on the car, I wanted some other opinions. Great that this forum exists!

My questions are (a) could it be the clutch withdrawl bearing? It is many years since I rebuilt a gearbox or changed a clutch and this may just be out-of-date idea, (b) any idea how much this would cost - I don't want to do it myself as there are many other ways of annoying my family and (c) any suggestions of good place around Manchester to do this?

The costs are important - it may be better to change car if it is likely to be expensive as I will also need new tyres at some point...
