Hi
I have two Multiplas that need new timing belts. As recommended I would like to replace the water pump at the same time. I don't want to spend a lot of money yet I dont want to have to redo the belt should the wp bearing on a cheapie wear out it disintegrate prematurely.

You can search on ebay but sellers set out to confuse. Most use at best 'misleaders' like 'OE quality', or 'marches OE', or use their own reference 'BOLK' which is their own made-up trade name to suggest German quality, or 'Manufacturer: FIAT' which does not refer to the manufacturer of the actual water pump. Others use a part reference code which a google search only throws up their own ebay offerings. If you ask them where their wp is made they will say something like it comes from FAI but they dont know where it is made. Most quote all the upmarket make references but only as cross-references.
If you go to Shop4parts it says their wp is made by Bugati
Ir shouldn't be this difficult to find a cheap OE approved waterpump!
Any recommendations or comments?

Most of the online spares places have help lines. If it doesn't say the manufacturer in the product description, give them a ring and ask.

It doesn't always follow that not giving the name on their site means that it'll be cheap and nasty. I bought my kit from BuyPartsBy last year. No name mentioned on the web page, but it was a proper, well packaged kit by Continental (the tyre manufacturer) with everything needed including new bolts, tensioner etc.

Local motor-factors would be where I'd steer you on this . . .
Same here, if you're that worried about the quality, it's best to just go to a reputable supplier (AllParts, EuroCarParts, GSF, etc)
They should have them in stock, or get one same/next-day.
I got mine from my local AllParts, they asked if I wanted the cheapest, or a better quality one.
The difference in price was only about £7.

Certain things, I'll go for the cheapest, but something that's capable of wrecking your engine by failing, I pay a bit more (y)

Continental Cam Belt Kits and Water Pumps are way better than SKF & Gates.

Hi
Thanks for the comments. I am not happy with the motor factors as they dont know the origin or quality just saying which wholesaler/distributer they used. ecp have two the cheaper is 'their own branded' Circoli which doesn't seem too good from the internet reports. The other more expensive one I cannot find who makes it. Shop4parts carry one made by Bugati but that is just a name not the esteemed auto firm.
In the end I ordered two Quinton Hazell QCP3366 ones from WilcoDirect at £24 after 20% discount. Later found that QH went bust in the Spring:(
They made OE waterpumps for Aston Martin, JLR, GM, Nissan and Volvo etc but have also read some were reboxed chinese:(
The same pump is on ebay at £46.50
It still seems hard to find your way around this global market!!!

Circoli are more reliable than QH all day long. Besides as you have said QH are bust ( No OE Warranty then ), Circoli are well known in Europe. ECP are not going to sell ****.

Hi
Thanks for the comment. If circoli are well known in Europe why dont they show up in a worldwide google (other than on ecp or related sites) and why would ecp supply a more expensive one too.
QH were until recently a much improved brand but that's by the way now.
Today the pumps arrived. The website reported stock but they supplied fai WP6228 pumps which I could have bought for £10 less on ebay but turned down. Just proves my point about the difficulty of buying traceable parts.

FAI ok for suspension bits and steering parts, but water pumps... ? would have a Circoli anyday.
