ok i've blown the front bass speakers in me car so need to get a replacement.. i have a few suggestions.

1. the pioneer swap it all combo, about £50
2. the pioneer tsc1395 components (£100)

or, can i buy just a set of 5x7's which will only take the bass (it alreay ghoes through a filter innit) so the high end will still come out the dash?

If so, is it worth getting expensive, or as its just bass will cheaper do... i ahve a few in mind.

JBL-GTO7525e
GTO7525e 180w peak, 5inch x 7inch 2 way unipivot angle
Price: £39.59

JBL-P75
175w peak, 2 way.5 x 7 inch mid bass, titanium tweeter
Price: £65.99

ROCFORD FOSGATE-FRC3257
2-Way 5inch x7Midrange/Tweeter/Grille 60/120w
Price: £76.21

I'm assuming the rockfords will have the best bass, but they do cost almost as much as the pioneer components? :) the p75's then or will it make not much difference over the other ones... i've already got 6x9's in the back and will probably add a bass box at a later date....

phew.... thanks!

Ben 5x7's really arn't great, although if you do want to go for one of those pick the Rockfords!

My own choice would be to make a set of MDF mounting rings and buy a set of 5" or 6" compontents (both will fit). A set of Kenwood Dual Mags at £100. will out perform the Pioneers you mentioned and have recently won a host of magazine reviews.
Out of interest will you be running them off a headunit or an amp?

headunit... ok, but the thing that confused me about components is the cross over bit. there's no way i'm laying extra wires in the door and trying to mount the x-over, so i would use the current wiring yes? Ok then, if that's all sweet where can i get all this stuff?

thanks yous!

Ok, your current stereo has crossovers (at least it should have).
You've got tweeters mounted up on the top of the dash and the mids (5x7's) in the doors.
You'll need to spend some time tracing the wiring from the headunit to find the crossovers (it'll be a small black/grey plastic box into which the speaker wire from the headunit runs. Out of the box comes two lots of speaker wire. One lot for the mid and one lot for the tweeter.). You'll find them under the dash somewhere.
You'll need to replace this crossover with the one that comes with the components you buy. That way you can use the factory wiring to the speakers.
If I've confused you, let me know and i'll re-explain.

ok, i see, but i dont like the idea of taking the dash apart ;) ... do you/does anyone, know where the crossovers are in a 1.6? also, what was the model of the kenwoods? and i could use the current x-over in the mean time couldn't i?

No you don't want to use the current crossover with uprated speakers!!! Very bad idea!
The crossover splits music frequencies so that the tweeter and mid only get the sound they are made for (high or mid-low frequencies).
The Fiat crossovers will work at different frequencies to other after-market speakers and you could damage them this way.
The Kenwood Dual-Mags are KFC-PSR51R's although you could go for something cheaper if your not going to amp them.
It would be best if you could re-wire the whole system. It's not difficult, and wouldn't take more than an afternoon to do.
Would of course be even easier if you could amp them :D

hmmm... well i def don't want to rewire (i'm sure it's easy, but i really would muck it up :)), £105 is a bit much, as i doubt i will ever amp, so the next down (£70 mark?) so i just need to put em in place (thats the easy bit 4 me!), and someone can tell me where the current x-overs are so i can swap em... cool!

I liked the fiat ones, they sounded good, so i assume these new ones will be like 100 times better? With little compo#s tho (13cm innit) won't there be less bass than a 5x7?

The Kenwood KFC-P503's are quite good, and quite bassy (I've had a set in the past). I think their about £60-65 depending where you look.
You don't really want bass from a set of components, they should be set up purely for vocals and your sub/6x9's in the rear will/should handle the deep notes.
If you were to fit 5x7's or 5" components your not going to get much (if any) bass out of them unless their amped anyway.
I'll have a look round at a few other speaker options and let you know what I think.

Right here are 3 options, I looked at the CarAudioDirect website (my favourite:)).

Personally I think you'd be best going for the MB Quarts if your not going to amp them. They have much better build quality than the Pioneers or the Kenwoods, and will sound better on the lower power from the headunit. The only problem is that their the most expensive of the three.

Hi Ben,

If ur lookin for an easy swop i can reccommend the JBL GT5.0C component speakers. They have an in line crossover which is tiny (non adjustable mind) yet you can simply whack them into the current wiring. I have the mid mounted in the door on an mdf mount (20 mins to make!) and the tweets mounted in the original bravo pod (on the dash) Had to make a small wooden adapter for these also. I havent checked to be honest but as far as i know the OE x-overs are part of the main speaker, no seperate parts to fish out.

The Kenwood dual mags are rated very good and i'm lookin at gettin a pair myself as soon as i've got the cash to add another amp for the front speakers. Only they have larger x-over units and you'll need to rewire really. The JBL's i'm on about are older models so not sure if they are still available, should be a repalacement model if not. If a tight budget is a factor you'll get a better 2-way speaker for the price of a cheap component speaker.

Oh yea, if ya want more bass from ur front spoeakers the bigger the mid speaker the better the bass, personally i would get a sub, or a decent set of 6x9's to give the bass.

Hope can be of some help!!
