I need to top my 1.4 petrol Stilo oil up. I have some Catrol GTX 10W-40 A3/B3 is that OK or is that not semi synthetic, is semi syn what I need?

Thanks for any advice

So is that Castrol GTX the wrong stuff?

Also I used to have fully syn in my other car and now it has Selenia in, is that OK to change from full to semi?

Thanks

castrol gtx is not the right stuff.

castrol magnetec is.

if its got fully sythetic top up with fully synthetic, if its semi top up with semi, if you dont know, get it changed asap.

Magnatec is NOT a semi .. they were taken to court by mobile over this and they still put synthetically engineered on the blooming bottle :bang:

Helfrauds do mobile S 10w 40 for around the £25 mark..

you might not like the oil, or the fact its some wierd hydro cracked mineral oil with some additives but it meets the specification of oil for engines which require semi synthetic.

gtx is mineral
magnetec is semi
edge is fully

changed the oil on my jtd about 4 weeks ago, fully synthetic 5-40 from partco, but I am wondering did I do the right thing by buying cheap £20 5 litres, should I empty and put selenia wr 5-40 also put cheap gear oil fully synthetic though, shall I start again and put tupela car technyx in gearbox if so were is the cheapest non of the general motorshops stock it e.g halfords

Its all down to personal choice. I and many other have run 10w40 in 16v Fiat engines without issue. I've done 20k in a year with mine without issue.

Isn't the 10 and the 40 to do with how thin the oil gets when cold and hot. In which case, is it safe to run oil not suggested by the manufacturer?

I may be completely wrong, but thats what i thought anyway.

It's always safe to use a better oil (as in normally more expensive) than the manufacturer recommends.

A 5W will generally cause less engine wear when the engine is cold (important in the winter) compared to a 10W but at running temperature both oils would have the same viscosity

Why's that then mate?

its gets into the tappets better when cold meaning they don't knock so much causing less wear, but still gives the same protection when warm as the 40 number stays the same

fiat put lots of R and D into solving the knocking/tapping noise on the 16v fires and that is why Selenia K was developed
