Technical Which Oil?

I have a X reg Diesel 1.9 105bhp and can't find on the forum enough about which oil to use. Castrol recommend CASTROL EDGE TURBO DIESEL 5W-40 and says it should be changed 3000-6000 miles and i'll need 4.2 litres.
It's not that I don't believe them just that only 4 litres of that can cost up to £45!
Does anyone know how much an oil and filter change costs at the moment, any special offers from KwikFit?
Also whats the service interval?

Oil to use is fully synthetic, I have 5w30 in mine at the present. 10w40 in summer.

Service interval is 12000 miles oil and filters - less if used primarily on short journeys <10mls; and from memory ( which is not as it was ) gear oil full synthetic 75w change every 60k.

72K Cam-belt or five years which ever comes up first.

I have my oil changed every six months at National tyres - watch the papers for a discount coupon. It usually costs about £30 for filter + fully synthetic oil (Castrol at present).

You can't buy the oil for that, never mind a filter - and keep your hands clean!
