I need some help please; the 500L I recently bought has had a larger engine fitted--from either a 500F or a 126. Different people have given me conflicting answers--my engine number is:- 126A1-0004611343--can somebody out there advise me either what it is, or where I can get my answer. Thanks folks:confused::worship:

Thanks for your answer 'Dunnah'--as far as I can see, there is NO 650 cast into the head and it has a 'normal' points 'n rotor-arm distributor (with a normal type coil)--what do you reckon it is/

It sounds a bit like a 600cc 500R or 126 engine but I'm no expert. I think all the 650's had the casting in the head and the very late (post 94 I think) had distibutorless igintion - so yours may be a 72 - 77 600cc engine??

Hi folks;
Thank you Dunnah and Bambino for your imput--and here's the rub--2 intelligent guys with the same info come up with 2 different sizes of engine! The people who sold me the car (who are Abarth specialists) say it's a 595, the log book says 650, so I'm even more confused now!:bang::confused:

I dug out the crankcase from the 1991 652cc FSM (Niki 650 = Fiat 126) that I stripped for parts. The stamping is 126A1.
Now I'm not right all of the time, but I think I've got it covered this time (y)
Not sure what the Abarth boys are on about :confused:
Chris

Thanks Chris for all your efforts--seems to have well and truly nailed that little query(y):worship:

The only way you can tell for sure is to pull the head and measure the bores. If I were to put money on it I would say that you have a 652ccs engine with an earlier cylinder head.

Good afternoon boys;
the discussion regarding my engine HAS BEEN SETTLED---I contacted a gent at Fiat UK called Tim Speechley who is the 'Homologation Executive'. He states that with a '126A1' engine type number it is DEFINATELY a 650 cc engine---to be a 600 (594 to be precise) it would have a number 126A1 or 126A5 (if it was one of the very last 600cc 500s) Tim only recognises the type number on the engine, although on the 'Forza Fiat 500' web-site it does state that the early 650cc 126 engines have '650' cast into the head. Tim Speechley is a very helful guy--he can date chasiss numbers, but not unfortunately engine numbers. :)

Interesting - my 1997 126A1 engine has the 650 head casting (and hardened valve seats) - but may not be original I suppose

Hi Dunnah'
Look at the 'www.forzafiat500.com' site--at the very beggining of the site (which is very useful as to modifying for tuning) there is a note regarding the various types of heads to be found on 500/126 engines.:)
