Technical When to change the Cam belt?

Hi, I have a 2007 Grande Punto 1.4. I had belt replaced at 59k (kms). Just hit 71 and it snapped. Is a 1.4 8v safe or not? Thanks.

So what you lost the car? What on earth happened? Did you speak to anyone about this?

Another day on Fiat Forum for Maxi....

Wife driving, went into safe mode and engine light came on orange. I drove it last night to see whats up. Engine stopped. Tried to start but no compression. On a wagon at the minute en route to the garage that replaced the belt. Fingers crossed.

Good luck and let us know what comes out of it.

manufacturer recommendations is usually 4 years 72k miles but there have been some reduced intervals to 36k on some engines, notable Alfa Twinspark

I just changed mine on a TJet at 70k miles/ 4 years service , I bought the car at 37k and decided I would trust Fiat this time that the interval was correct
my trust was not misplaced (y)

on a 1.2 no need to worry

remember the timing belt does not transmit the engine power, it is only subject to the inertia of the valvetrain
high revs will accellerate wear though, so yes if you have been ragging the car like a biatch it makes sense to change earlier as Jason does

Got another quote today from a local indi. They came up with £350 to £400!
I'm tempted to check the price with Uncle Arnold the Fiat Dealer on this one.

Best off posting in the GP section :) Could possibly be camshaft sensor at a guess?

Ill check the sections next time, wasnt sure what section I was even posting in, the thread was spot on for my original query. Thanks.(y)

Turned out to be this little thing. Caused belt to jump.
No idea how it got in or where it came from.
All sorted for €60, no damage.
Thanks guys.

Glad it's all sorted :)

Well, thanks for the thread folks.....and now I've a card from the Dealers reminding me to get my timing belt changed or, if my 500 Lounge 1.2 doesn't have one (i.e. has a chain instead), offering a free vehicle check.
You've answered that one for me.....clearly, from the thread I've a non interference cam belt model. But has anyone posted a guide on how to change the thing myself, what tools/dials/gauges etc are needed and difficulty rating.

Thinking has moved on since this thread was started.

The current consensus view is that the 69HP 1.2 FIRE used in the 500 is an interference engine and does NOT have a fail safe cambelt.

I would strongly advise obtaining the correct locking tools before attempting to change one yourself.

Oh Dear! sounds expensive......but thanks for the quick response

Hi!! I didn't know whether to start a new thread or resurrect this one, as it's the same question, but more basic! (sorry!)
How often should I change the cam belt. My fiat 500 pop has 18,000 miles on the clock and I only do about 1000/year just locally in the city. My usual place (who aren't the most honest) said to replace it every 4 years (and quoted well over £500), but when I asked another place for a quote, they said not to bother when there's less than 50,000 miles. How often does it need to be done, and what's a realistic price nowadays? (PS can you recommend a place in East/central London at all?)

Hi

What age is the 500?

Do you know about its last change..?

Was it : a belt

A belt kit

Kit and waterpump?

If it never moved in lockdown.. it might be worth getting the KIT fitted..
Sounds like you will be paying labour.. so it is worthwhile

The 500 share many parts with the FORD KA

so many places have the correct kit to do this job properly :)
