No way! Colour me surprised...

For only 20k you can get "illest" engraved sideways on the front window.

Weirdest bit is if you go that option the only wheel choices are purple Bentley wheels or banded steelies off a polo for some reason..

Wife had an accident last Thursday in her mini, waiting to see if the car will be written off as it was quite badly damaged by someone who pulled across in front of her while she was traveling on a straight road on her way home.

In the mean time we’ve been given a Mercedes A class.....

It’s a lovely car and very well nailed together, but for a car that would be £20ishK they have done some pretty weird things.

1. The CarPlay set up (which is great software and I have it in my golf) works fine but no touch screen, it’s supposed to be as easy as using your iPhone on your car display and instead you have to scroll through multiple menus with a big Comand control knob by the gear stick, which brings me on to point 2

2. When you phone someone on car play the controls hover over the hang up button which is activated by pressing down on the control knob.... which is immediately beside the cup holder. Put my coffee cup down, caught the button, hung up twice on people in the the space of about 10 minutes.

3. The radio/infotainment system of this essentially brand new prestige marquee car doesn’t have a DAB radio!!! seriously Mercedes have a word with yourself, almost every manufacturer does DAB as standard, I can’t imagine it will be very cheap to replace the infotainment system in a few years when they start looking at turning off the FM signal.

4. It has a reversing camera, which is very cool, it pops out from just above the reg plate on a motor when you select reverse, I can’t imagine this was a cheap item to develop and again costly to fit to the car.... so why not fit parking sensors which would have been a lot more bloody useful that dark picture out the back of the car, which I can clearly see out the window. It’s the low down things I can’t see that it would be nice to be aware of, if i can’t see something dark or in shadow, neither can the bloody camera !

5. Fake parking sensors, that’s right around the front bumper there are pre moulded and blanked parts of the bumper for parking sensors, but it doesn’t have any! No fake ones on the back mind you, again these things are very cheap (£10 for a set on eBay) tried and tested and work very well, so why have they cheaped out! I took my golf in for a service 2weeks ago and had a loan pool for the day, probably half the price of the merc and even this had front and back parking sensors (touch screen car play and a DAB radio).

6. Light up Mercedes logos on the door sills, probably could have better spent the money elsewhere !

7. Probably my biggest annoyance, the indicators, lights washers and wipers are all on one single steering column stalk on the left of the wheel, every one know wash and wipe goes on the right, lights on the left. On other cars the buttons for the trip computer, on this wash the windscreen. Mean while there are seemingly far too many buttons on the steering wheel both sides which don’t appear to do a lot.

It in all honesty is a very nice car, very comfortable and quite and drives very well. But it had got some very weird quirks which don’t seem necessary and others that don’t make a lot of sense, and some that are just cheap.

Hope everyone is okay, and that the insurance doesn’t give you any crap over it.

Never would have thought Mercedes would have so many odd features but I suppose extravagance is their thing if anyone’s?!

Hope shes o.k. :)

You'll be glad to know some of your gripes with the A class can be solved by the options list...funny that, although parking sensors and DAB is a grand to you sir. Or only xx a month.

Also for all the pop out theatrics it must be a poor quality reversing camera they've fitted. The Citroen one works in the dark with the light from the reversing light but it also has parking sensors..

Had a bump in a hire car. That's going to be a world of pain tomorrow. A several page incident report signed by god knows how many managers, followed up with a safety discussion with every manager who has heard about the accident too.

I can't seem to find what you are supposed to do when a police car is driving through a junction. It was my right of way and I was half way across a dual carriageway, with traffic lights, when a rozzer came from my left so I stopped to let them through. Unfortunately the lorry behind didn't. Would the insurance be 50/50 on that as I stopped on a green light?

Why would you be guilty? As far as I know, the police has right to pass and everyone else should stop/move from their way...And it's a rear bump so lorry is guilty...What happened the next day by the way?

Five killed when the stolen Clio they, along with two others, were joyriding in crashed into a tree in Leeds. The 15yo driver legged it but was caught. I've read that it was'nt being pursued, just lost control. I live about 15mls north and know the area well, most of the teenage hoodies in the area are on weed by the time they get to secondary school.
Nobody wants to hear news of deaths on the roads and I'm saddened by it.
I do, however, think that it's five less thieving toe-rags to worry about and I'm pleased that they did'nt crash into a car full of innocent people and kill those too.

I also find the social-media "he was my little angel" and "he was just a cheeky little chappie" type stuff along with the track-suit clad, weeping chavs laying flowers at the site a tad nauseating. Maybe I'm just cynical. I lived, as a child, on a council estate in West Yorkshire and I know that peer-pressure is all. I did quite well and now live in the leafy suburbs of genteel Harrogate but, sadly, none of those lads will ever get the chance to realise any aspirations that they may have had.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

It's one of those things, they'll never get a chance to learn from their mistakes..but would they have?

People don't take to social media to say "he was a wrong un". A lad I went to school with was the son of a murdered hardnut, he had a chequered career at school to say the least, highlights including dousing his grandma's house with fuel and threatening to set the place a light if the police kicked the door in. Anyway he finally died of a drug overdose in his early 20s..in a car in the back lane of an industrial estate and you would not believe the eulogising that went on. That and all the local wannabes trying to position themselves as one of his trusted friends/Right hand men.

You shouldn't speak ill of the dead but sometimes when there own actions lead to their downfall it's hard to feel sympathy.

It's not bad enough for them to make terrible cars but they have ruined Fiat as well.

My Grande Punto is off to the scrap heap.

Edited to add.

Sorry guys. I've only had three hours sleep in two days. If anyone wants any parts before I scrap the Grande let me know.

My first surprise experience of low profile 17s in the snow.

Left work to mild sleet, but I live above the snow line, so slowly climbing my way up, literally went from wet slush to virgin snow half way up a street. So ended up going rather quickly into an opposition situation and the ABS had literally no interest in stopping the car.

Once that was out of the way got my snow driving head on and she sledged along gamely enough, the TCS only flashed once when I gave it a little bit too much trying to maintain momentum.

Not looking forward to tomorrow's commute..

Im also worrying... the other year i left work to sleet then sheet ice on a 12mile commute in my 1.2 stilo.

Took me 4 n half hours, had a roasting off the misses until she saw the news, it was more the other drivers who where inadequate causing the huge tail backs.

Ive now got the 1.9, heavier front end but can't see it help much since she is shed in 215 / 45 and is running 200hp and has literally no lag in 1st, 2nd, 3rd at around 1800rpm so if I decide to rustle it its just going to burry itself in the stuff...

The 1.2 wasnt too bad but im already slipping around with greasy / sort of icy roads now and have to drive like a taxi in 3rd...

We also live quite high up too so i can see some fun... but is it worth it? Going to have to let it drive with momentum off the clutch lol or have it mapped back to stock.

It'll be interesting to see what the weather is like here tomorrow, I've had the Alfa in Dynamic since I bought it, maybe it's time to give this a try ...

Gritters been down now at least hopefully it won't clear and freeze..already seen the local radge Leon fall off the road sideways in front of my house and a taxi crash at the end of the street.

However - Fiat got a massive wedge from the 'divorce settlement'. http://www.economist.com/node/3473604
