dad has a focus estate TDCI on a 60 plate.. Anyhow its got discs all round.......
Ive noticed for a while that the handbrake was crap.... But they sorted it last service apparently and i had the job sheet shown to me... He has always been a main dealership man had about 5 cars from the same dealership.
Fast forward to this weekend and out on the back roads coming to a junction on a hill dad found it didn't hold and rolled back (fortunately there was nothing behind)... Now admitting that there was a problem with it and knowing its still under warranty and i dont think they did much on the last service bar wind the cable adjuster in near the handbrake..
I had a quick look and from the advice of a ex ford mechanic mate (ive never had owt to do with rear discs all my cars have had drums ..) tried a couple of none invasive tool less checks as apparently the brakes are not adjustable like drums and its all done in the rear caliper.
And concluded that the pads are seized in the caliper and not moving properly and they are inballenced (if you pulled the handbrake on it would rise up on one side and not the other same in reverse) ..
So dad phones them up to book it in mentions about it rolling away down a hill and them looking at it last service... With the response been along the lines of...
"They all do that its normal for it to need pulling up 8 clicks to hold the car on a slight hill. If we adjust them any more they will bind and it will wear your brake pads out. and its not possible for a 60 plate to have siezed pads"
No offer to look at them nothing....
So i gave him the option take it to our local independent who do our MOT and get it stuck on the brake tester get a fail sheet then go dump the car at the dealership or let me have a go at it (i am mechanically savvy honest)
So tonight i stripped filed, cleaned and copper slipped the pads caliper carriers guide pins and associated parts Me thinks they have never been done on the past 2 services there was no trace of any brake grease or coppa slip anywhere and the carriers were welded to the pads (ive had cars which pads had a stick on anti squeal pad but never stuck like this.. and one of the pads had a screw driver mark on the back plate where it looks like they hammered it out last time (probably freed off during last service) adjusted handbrake my arse more like jammed driver in and ****ted with hammer to free off pad then wind up adjuster

......
first side took me 40 mins the other took about 15 and guess what it now works and holds the car on about the 4th click wheels still spin freely. with the adjuster wound off a fair way from where it was.....
My main point of wonder is how many other people who are not mechanically minded get fobbed off by main dealerships who cant be arsed chasing Manufacturers for warranty repair work.
Half of me wonders if they are holding out for him to take it there for its first MOT and 3rd service so they can charge him for the work?..
Anyway grumble over for now
