You could've very easily avoided that by slowing down.
Watching that a few times you seem like you're the type of guy that thinks "get off my side of the road, im an impatient tw*t and my journey is much more important than yours."
Why not just slow down then pass safely?

I'd let off the throttle at the top of the hill, was going down way under the speed limit

Sorry but whilst I agree they shouldn't have blindly followed, you shouldn't have assumed it was clear.... if the previous car had been towing a trailer you might have taken it and your car out. Both in the wrong IMHO.

Could you see properly that your intended path was clear? No.
Would you drive through a brick wall in the middle of the road just because it shouldn't be there? No.
