Having picked up our new multipla and given it a new battery. It has now been confirmed that the passenger side airbag is broken and will cost an arm and a leg to fix.
Anyone else had a similar problem?

Who diagnosed a u/s airbag? I wouldn't lose heart just yet. Most of the time, airbag warning lights are down to flaky connections. If your car h afteras seat side airbags (check for a little 'airbag' tag sewn into the side bolster of the backrest), look for a small orange connector on the floor immediately next to the front/LHS of the left-most front passenger seat. Disconnect the car battery, leave for about 20 minutes, then pull connector apart & give it a squirt of WD40. Plug/unplug the connector a good few times after that to clean up the contact surfaces.

There's a similar connector(but yellow this time) for the passenger side dash airbag, under the panel with 'airbag' sewn into it.

Both of these are covered by old forum threads, with photos and instructions. Do a search restricted to the Multipla section and you'll soon find them. I would post links but it's a PITA on a phone.....

Good luck!

We took it to a local mechanic in the German town where we are staying. This car is a left hooker so I've just been out to check where these connectors are. There is an Orange connector on the top right hand corner of the seat base ( view from above). If I was to clean these connectors, am I likely to to either get electrocuted or have the airbags activate?
Also, this isn't the end of it. As soon as we picked it up and drove for a while we stopped for 2 seconds and tried to set off again but the battery was flat. A new battery was fitted and this cancelled the engine management light which was on but this came back on today as the missus tried to overtake. Also sometimes it can be stiff to change gears and putting it into reverse sounds awful, even if you have the clutch right down. Im starting to wonder if it will get us home!

You'll be fine with the airbag connectors if, as I said, you disconnect the battery and leave the system to discharge for a while first. The warning lights on the dash may stay on for a few days after you've effected the repair (you need a special piece of kit to reset them manually) but the ecu will sort itself out given time.

Gearchange woes sound very much like a knackered clutch. Replacement is an expensive job on the Multipla, especially if the DMF needs doing as well, and is a common reason for owners getting shot of their car.

Engine management light can be caused by any number of things but is usually cheap to repair. The expensive/time consuming bit is tracking down exactly what the fault is........

Mine has been throwing up the 'ENG CNTRL FAULT' warning on and off for months now, sometimes with the 'Limp Mode' active (still good for 3000rpm & 80mph), sometimes not.
I got a Code Reader for it, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Stiff Gearchange may be dry/sticky cables, mine got like that after a recent downpour, found the Gaiter at the bottom is now in three pieces.
A squirt of lube on the cables from the top (Gear Lever surround and Gaiter pops off easily for access), and at the exposed lower ends sorted it.

If the Clutch engages/disengages with the Pedal close to the floor, or 'drags', it may need Bleeding.

If the Pedal travel feels heavy/stiff, you can try lubing the mechanism.

Might also be worth checking the Gearbox Oil level.
