Jings not another oil what should I use question......
Sorry to sound cynical but just use the oil recommended for your vehicle.
It doesnt have to be a certain make, IE shell, esso, mobil etc, but as long as it comes up to spec....check your hand book...;)

Absolutely correct! (y)

Problem is that lots of folk have some kind of 'informed' opinion about particular oils and how this oil killed their engine or that other oil is the only one to use.

Check spec in handbook against spec on oil container and go for the cheapest that matches. :)

Don't want to bang on about oil but, changing oil times are what some should concern themselves about;)

Ive heard some horror stories how some guys never change the oil at all & only top up:eek:
Twice a year is deemed good for an engine.
There are so many posts on here about the subject......

Ive come across experts on the subject, & its almost laughable some of the stories Ive been told...

Hit the search button on google..... truths & myths about engine oil.....
This makes for interesting reading;)

Having previously owned an alfa 156 2.0 ts, I religiosly changed my oil every 5000 with selenia semi as this was what oil alfa/fiat recommended. This didn't stop a big end shell from giving up. I changed the shell and put some cheap comma semi in in with the idea of running for a couple of hundred miles and then changing it with selenia recommended. It made it to about 80 miles on the trip before a slight tapping appeared. I changed the shell again this time cleaning the crank pin with some fine carborundum and WD40. I replaced every thing and used selenia semi straight away. 500 mile later she was still running fine, dont ask me after 500 miles because i sold her. Anyway what I did notice about the two oils that a used was the thickness, consistancy or viscosity as some people like to say. Although they where identical in spec the cheaper one was a bit pissy. I cant say that using the Selenia instead of the comma would have stopped my big end shell from going second time around but for the price of Selenia from fiat and a filter I think its very reasonable. And just to add to this I was originally sold fully synth for my Alfa by a small car parts outlet before realising that I should be using semi. I now always check my manual.

During my training too many ago now. I seen a presentation from shell all about oils.
The message I took from the presentation was that you can never change your oil often enough. As Oil begins to breakdown from the first minute you put into your Engine. I have carried that message all through my Motoring life
and change my oil every 6000 miles or thereabouts. With the new synthetic oils the life of the oil is longer so I leave aynthetic until 8000 miles.
My Multipla 1.9jtd will hit 150000 miles next week and still the engine behaves like it came out of the showroom recently.

As a new owner myself, I'm a bit confused about oil too. Some places say 5W-40, some 10W-40 and one website actually said 0W-40
Although they all said synthetic oil not semi.
Anyone know the proper grade as I'd like to change mine soon. :D

After making sure it was up to the required spec, I've been using fully synthetic oil from National Tyre Services who do an oil and filter change for considerably less than I can buy just the oil for. (The job was around £28 at the last oil/filter change).

I've used them for my last four cars since I discovered their prices and have had no oily bother at all. And my hands stay clean!:)

Usual disclaimer - other than a customer I've no connection with this company. And there may well be other companies who do a similar job for a similar price!

Look in your owners manual, and you will notice that all the grades you mentioned are fine, and can be used.
If it's a gasoline engine, Castrol Edge 0W40 fully synthetic is one of the best oils available today.
