I have a choice of 91, 96 or 98 unleaded. The dealership I spoke to were a little vague as to whether 96 or 98 was required. I've tried both and can't tell the difference. I wonder whether I will notice 91.

My owner's manual specifies min 95 octane. i've got a Punto II with the 1.2 8v.

Don't go with 91.

95 upwards is best. Personally I fill up at BP, usually just the standard unleaded but every now and then a tank of 'Ultimate' (98 Ron) goes in.

Especially at the mo with triple nectar points!

:D

I use 95 most of the time, and 97/98 if I feel generous. To be honest I can't tell much difference between them really, I just like to treat my baby now and then :D

You're wasting your money buying 98 unless:
-you have an ultra high compression engine.-pressure built up in the cylinder will cause ignition before the spark plug fires.
-you have an old beat up motor with carbon deposits that may ignite the air/fuel mixture prematurely thereby causing predetonation, pinging etc.

Remember, the higher the octane the more resistant the fuel is to ignition.

I just love Shell, where the guy tries to convince me that their 99+ will make my Punto run faster.
Used to be that the premium gasolines had more cleaners and junk that were supposed to make your engine run better and last longer but now I don't see that marketed any more. I suspect that due to fuel content legislation there is no difference between additives to lower and higher octane fuels.

Hello

I have a Punto 75 and have used both types of fuel.

95 is the recommended and it is ok but when I use 98 then there is less knocking.

In any case I dont recommend the 91 RON the engine is designed to use 95 RON or above
