Tuning What engine? Help!

mine doesn't have any of that.. mine has machined down original pistons to lower compression, my old one had decomp plate. Other option is 1242 8v with 16v pistons in, makes 7.8:1 iirc - low enough for lots of boost anyway. Should be ok upto 160-170bhp with 16v pistons, i wouldn't really want to take my machined down pistons much further than 130-140bhp though. Not had it on rr but think its about 110bhp atm running 11psi of boost. But my old one i ran daily at 25psi and it was fine (somewhere around 130bhp)

Probably the cheapest and most accessible option.

The beauty of the cinquecento, as well as this forum, is the options!

There's:

1108 highly tuned NA
1108 Turbo
1242 8v Turbo (or NA)
1242 16v (pretty sure someone turbo'd this too.)
1.4 16v (cinq999 is in the process of turboing this)

There's probably a couple I'm missing, but there's plenty of threads on all of these!

i think basically, we're at the point now where there is little left that you have to be the guinea pig for. Most stuff has been done and documented multiple times, be it engine or braking or chassis upgrades, its pretty much been done if you can think of it. Just not alot of t-jet conversions done but i still maintain that the 1.2 16v would be a better base for a turbo cento which is why craig turbo'd a 1.2 16v rather than starting with a tjet or 1.4 16v.

edit: not because i said so you understand, just that he came to the same conclusion ;)

Which would be more reliable as work and back is 28 miles and in total 2 hours driving! I would love some choo choo's ;)

Everything's relative.

If you're going low boost, you don't need that much doing, and 1.2 16v pistons would do just fine. But then you've got to swap in a 1.2 8v etc (or get it bored out i guess, but that would cost more than it's worth).

Machining down pistons is great so long as the workmanship is good. ;)

Can't see anything wrong with a decomp plate either, so long as it's a proper one, not just a couple of head gaskets glued together (I've seen that done first hand, not good).

On a day to day basis, i cant speak for it! I don't have a turbo cinq! (no matter how much i dream....)

as with most things, the crucial thing is that its built and setup properly. I don't really use my seiT often but its only ever broken down to the point of needing a tow once since i had it and that was a dead fuel pump i.e. would have happened turbo or not.

My cinq was a reliable daily drive though, i was younger then too and thrashed the living daylights out of it. You just have to look after stuff and service them and they are fine 99% of the time.

I might point out as well that back in the day when Van Aaken sold kits, the low boost kit didn't have lowered compression or an intercooler. Not sure what kind of power they made but you don't have to go the whole 9 yards if what you want is a reliable daily thats fun and nippy.

Turbo's are alot of work to get right so don't kid yourself, if you want a nippy and pretty easy solution a 16v is prob best solution but there really should be more turbo cento's out there IMO.

One more idea, there are two instances in PL, one finished recently: 1.1 16V turbo ;)

Just stick a tuned 1.2 8v in there it will be plenty for you for a another year , then it will get you a bit more Exp behind the wheel and there quick enough (Y)

SPI versions are very hard to come by with low miles nowadays.

Then they do make they 1.2 8v mpi, but then what'd be the point? Might as well go 16v by then ;)
