Went to buy a Stilo this morning, A black 54plate JTD that had been lowered and blacked windows, to find it had been sold

So now looking at this Silver JTD. 03 Plate, 140k mile. £1400. Full Service History with Reciepts, 5month MOT and 7month Tax

only issues i noticed was a little bit of bubling on the tailgate paintwork. and there was a low whine in all gears under torque.. but that could be the turbo

Turbos make a high pitched whistle not a low whine.

Low whine sounds more like wheel bearings, clutch thrust bearing, diff bearing etc. IMO.

By low i meant quiet :bang: my mistake.

but it was at the lower rev range not the higher. but thats only because thats when i noticed it

How much are those to fix then?

and anyone got a video of what they sound like.. :p

Just in general advice, if you look at the mileage thread in this forum you may be surprised to see that there aren't many that make it past 140k miles without major part replacement. Obviously it's about how well maintained and serviced you keep it but I wouldn't look at anything that had done over 70k miles myself. I got a high spec 06 model for £2k recently that had done less than 50k miles. Just always the worry that something major will go wrong at that kind of mileage.

Maybe you can get the price lower :). You're almost guaranteed to have to spend a few hundred on it at least in the next few months, has been that way with both my Stilos.

Your the first person to warn me of high milage on the JTD's

Ive always been told that they are strong engines and can cope with high milage.

several ive seen are on 170k odd and ive seen one on 250k..

Have a look at the thread and see what you think. It's more things like gearbox, clutch etc that would worry me, especially at the life stage where it is cheaper to sell the car than do the repairs. I'm not trying to discourage you from it, just maybe you can get a bit more money off. How many miles do you do a year?

grit your teeth and whisper 'wiss' thats kinda the sound turbo whine makes... its a very highpitched whooshing noise.

if you overtake a truck on the motorway going down a hill and keep level with the cab as it starts to pull up the hill you will hear the turbo spool up and start working hard.

theres this dude revvin the knackers off his mazda and i hope he blows it up but you can hear the turbo when he open the throttle

now ive made myself sound like a complete richard im off

Got to sift through all them pages :p

counted several JTD's on +130k miles in that thread.

Yep, sounds like the turbo then.. I used to own Turbo Diesels, but been on Petrol for the last 3 car and 4 years.

just forgot what there like to drive really.

Just remember the gearbox was a little stiff in 1st and 2nd. but i was putting that down to not been used to the box and a long shift stick.. but then again my Astra is the same in 1st and 2nd.

Yeah, although what I'm saying is more about the other major parts... even petrol engines should have no problem 100k plus if you just take the engine by itself, good diesels 500k, 1 million maybe? The rest of the car will die first. If you've factored that into the costs then fair enough. Plenty of people are happy to have the car and pay more than the value on repairs, they're cheap cars after all.

Also that thread is the highest mileage thread.. hopefully yours isn't at it's highest mileage yet!

the dealer just emailed me about it after i sent a few queries. Cam belt done on 84k, clutch at 100k. last service may last year at 130k.

Clutch at 100k is a good sign. Service schedule doesn't go up to that kind of mileage but recommends timing belt change at 90k I think so you should be fine for a while unless it was done a few years ago.

Have you checked all the electrics? I checked what I thought was everything on mine and still missed something stupid! Are there two keys? (£250+ for key replacement) etc etc etc...

Nice looking car, reminds me of my first one :)

Looks smart, with the optional Blade alloys and bodykit. The bubbling on the tailgate looks like it's from where the original dealer screwed the number plates on in the wrong place - Fiats are meant to have the plates screwed on in all four corners rather than the middle. Given its location i'd imagine it'll be fairly easy to rub down & patch up without it being majorly obvious. The original Fiat number plates bode well for ruiling out potential accident damage.

The gearboxes/clutches on the JTDs ive driven (including mine) have all been heavy so i'd not worry about the stiffness (ahem), but whining is a concern. The JTD doesn't have a particular appetite for gearboxes (unlike the 1.6 petrol) and the engine is one of the most bombproof out there but at that mileage it's not unreasonable for other parts to get tired. If the clutch and cambelt have been changed then that bodes well but i'd wanna see invoices with the registration number on to prove this. A garage can say anything. I'd also have a look at how long the last owner has kept the car, as it points to how generally dependable it's been & see if front suspension arms, front top struts/mounts & waterpump have been done at all, as these are the areas where i've spent money on mine & i think suspension is an area that from experience seems weaker on Fiats than other cars.

I'd knock them down a couple of hundred because of the whining noise, but tbh at 140k i think bills are only to be expected on most cars. This is offset by the fact that it'll depreciate alot slower than a newer, lower mileage car that may have smaller repair bills.
