What coolant should i use?

Up to you, really. In Halfords the Red long life stuff seems to be the same price as the Blue 2 year stuff. Just remember to top it up with the right/same one.

I have a load of blue stuff i use in my Beemer, is that ok or does it have to be a special type? i have no idea about coolant, as you can tell lol

As long as you don't mix, it doesn't matter. Just make sure that - if there's red in there now - you flush it out properly before filling with blue.

to be honest it looks like its just water, poor little peril wasn't looked after at all by the previous owners, i will flush it through any way, found an old plastic pump blade wedged into what seems to be a newish water pump when i just took it out, so could have plastic impeller blades floating around in the block :S

You could try one of the propriety coolant flush compounds suitable for mixed metal engines first to get soluble crud out.

The plastic impellors have excellent hydrodynamic until they turn into granules.
