Hi there i have a weird noise when i turn the steering wheel. It dont do it all the time infact very rarely but its like a cranking noise. The steering is fine not loose or heavy at all just an annoying noise when it happens. Was wondering if anyone could shed light on this thanks

Hi What model of car is it, do you get the noise if you are dry steering (turning the steering from lock to lock when staionary) or is it when you are on the move going round a tight bend like a round about.

When im moving but not normally just when i go round a roundabout when i really have to turn the steering wheel alot

Hmm if it is only when going round tight bends and its a sort of clicking sound it might be one of the CV joints rather than the steering rack itself

Are they both easy fixes in a garage or are they expensive?

replaceing the CV joint itself is quite a straight forward job for a garage mechanic it would be easy the only fiddley bit is the CV joint itself is retained onto the drive shaft by a circlip but as I say if the work is being done in a garage that's not an issue. I am not too sure what a garage would charge for the work last time i had to get a CV joint i think it was about £30.00 per side for the units them self.

Ah thats grand then just as long as its not hundreds of euro lol. If its not that and its the steering rack how much for that and how hard is that?

If it is the steering rack then that is a much more complex and you would probaly be cheaper getting a second hand steering rack as new they are pretty exspensive. The work itself is not too difficult but it is quite envolved and there is a fair bit of work requierd. It would be better if it is the CV that has gone.

I hope its just that i mean its just started happening and happens rarely. Would i be able to get a steering rack from a scrappies and for how much? Also should i get alot more wear out of the steering rack if that is the problem?

ye there should be no problem getting a Steering rack from your local scrappie. Cost will depend on how old the rack is and if it came from a high or low mile car best thing to do is call round a few places gets some quotes. If it is the steering rack itself it will be ok for a while depends how much driveing you do you will find that you start to get less and less respnse from the steering and may find the steering wheel vibrates and shakes. From what you have said and my exspericance i would say it is more likley to be the CV joint(s).
