Jim,
I've got the same problem on my JTD, had it for over a year with no problems and I drive about 25k miles a year.
Just been looking in elearn and it appears that the EGR valve also needs to be removed to allow access, that's a right ball ache in my opinion, I think i'll get my garage to do when they do the cam belt and water pump as the coolent will be already drained.

Has anyone done one without removing the EGR?

Coolant Bleeding procedure for JTD

Thought i'd post this as just found it from elearn and seems to include alot of the "suggestions" or experiences posted in other threads by forum users.

Please note this is for JTD only and note the words in red

Disconnect the lower radiator hose and drain the engine coolant unless already drained when thermostat removed.

Open the bleed located on the radiator.
Open the bleed on the heater coolant pipe
Open the bleed on the pump rigid coolant supply pipe and wait until the cooling system is completely drained.

Fill cooling system as follows
Connect the lower engine radiator hose and secure with a new collar
Slowly introduce coolant into the reservoir taking care to keep the level as close as possible to the MIN mark until coolant comes out of the bleed on the radiator
Tighten and close the bleed on the radiator
Continue refilling the system and tighten the bleed screw on the heater pipe as soon as engine coolant comes out
Continue refilling and tighten the bleed on the pump rigid coolant supply pipe as soon as engine coolant comes out
Complete the engine coolant refilling operation when the MAX reference mark on the reservoir is reached
Close the expansion tank cap
Start up the engine and keep it idling for at least 2-3 minutes.
Pump the accelerator at intervals (every 30 seconds) gradually to take engine speed up to 3/4 of the maximum power speed, continuing, if necessary to refill until the MAX mark is reached.
This operation should be continued until the engine cooling fan comes on for the first time.
Keep the engine idling for 5 minutes.
Turn off the engine and wait for the coolant to cool down
Make sure that hot air comes out of the vents in the passenger compartment
If necessary, top up the level by unscrewing the cap and adding coolant.
Check that the coolant level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the expansion tank.

Hope this helps, it certainly helped me get my head around it, :D

Hi, took mine to a local garage who said afterwards never again. E-learn states that the battery, battery holder, air intake to the manifold and the EGR be removed.

There is one stud bolt that goes through the thermostate housing and bolts to the 'gas' cylinder below it.

I've removed the EGR for cleaning by undoing the gas cupped flange at the thermostat thus freeing up the steel down pipe because I could only work from the top of the engine. I do believe there is a cupped flange at each end of the cylinder. Awkward access is the main obstacle.
Hope this helps a little.

WOW my old Ford Escort where are you now, sounds to big a job for my ability but thank you everyone for your input.

LOL, it's pretty simple, unbolt, remove, then put back together....... like a jigsaw really !!!!
As with everything on the Stilo (JTD in particular) access is the main problem around the engine.
I bled my coolant earlier after finding the procedure and has made no difference. I think my thermo is stuck shut as neither rad pipe got hot even though dash gauge was rising slowly, heater was lovely and hot though.

Just ordered new thermo, with water pump and some selenia oil from shop4parts ready for the service next month so got whole lot changed while their at it.
