Happy new year all!!!

I’m after a decent waterproof protector for my little 500C. I’ve used the autoglym kit, but I think they have changed the product, as it’s no longer a spray and doesn’t seem to repel the water in form of water droplets as it has done previously!

I’ve also tried renovo and that’s also no good.

Does anyone have any suggestions of one that you can see repeals the water? Just seems like my roof absorbs it!

And it also doesn’t help that next doors Cat is using it as his scratch post, so any suggestions with that would also be helpful.

Y’a :)

Have a look on one of the chandler sites or a boat canvas maker, they will know decent stuff…this one’s run by a mate, they’re always willing to help

Thank you.

I’ve popped them a message on Facebook :)

The old solvent-based water repellents seem to have disappeared - I was using Autoglym and then Meguairs annually but can't get 'em any more. So I'm also casting about for a replacement and I'm going to try this one; https://www.bowdensown.com.au/fabratection

My 500C is ten years old now but the black roof looks near-new. It lives in the garage which helps, keeping it out of the AU sun and I would also recomment a half-cover if it's practical for you;

As to the cat my first impulse would be to shoot it but that's probably not an option.:giggle:

The autoglym one was my go to, but buying it again, the new version is pants. Then I tried the other one I mentioned also not so great, it’s like my roof is still absorbing water rather than repealing any of it 🤷‍♀️

I ordered this one until I find a half decent one, as above also I emailed to find out what boating companies would recommend.

I’ve been looking at half covers, but with the cat 🐈 his just going to rip holes in it :-( I would love to consider shooting it but being a cat lover, lll let his own Fate dictate what happens to him. I text my neighbour as it’s there cat (no response) so I’ve moved my car on to the road as he uses it to jump from the porch down, so now I’m hoping he will use his owners car to get down from the porch and destroy his roof on his merc soft top convertible!! I don’t know what else I can do with the poxy cat 🐈‍⬛ all cats should be kept as house cats rather than free to roam, my cat is happy as a house cat and comes into the garden with me.

Regarding the cat….bit of pepper on the roof…
I’ve used the autoglym stuff seems to be relatively repellent, but the first stuff isn’t removing the green crud on the roof very well…cou0e of good washes and soaks and agitating helps cos the water is filthy…..but the slightly green patches are there still.

When was the last time you bought autoglym? Last time I bought the older version was 5 year ago and the new stuff deffo isn’t as good now.

Luckily I don’t have any alge on the roof, looks new other than the roof absorbs water.

I’ve bought some dodo juice branded one and I’ll see how that goes by there saturation technique as it appears it may need a good build up in the first instance.

The previous brand I used was renovo the cleaner seems to work well, but the water repellent side didn’t really repeal water (perhaps just one paint wasn’t enough) however I I’ve ordered the other brand for the time being see how it goes :)

But would still love to see others recommendations and what products have worked well or not so well :)

I'll be interested to learn how that one works once you've used it - please let us know. It's relatively cheap compared with the Bowdens one but I'll go that route anyway and once done report my results. To be honest my top rarely gets wet and even then it's usually only when I wash the car! The water was still beading from the last application of Meguairs and that was at least two years ago but last week I used their soft-top cleaner so it may now be compromised.

Like the pepper idea (I'm no cat lover!) but it sort of runs counter to the idea of cleaning the soft-top!

I've seen a 500C with green in the bottom of the rear window - 'orrible. Have you tried a vinegar solution? Never had to do it but my wife swears by it!

soft top isn’t going to be much cop if it’s full of claw holes!
start with stopping the cat….then worry about cleaning it

Next door's cat used to like kipping on the roof of the 500c that my wife had, resulting in lots of hair that I had to remove with a sticky roller. I managed to deter it with an ultrasonic animal scarer screwed to the wall - it was under a car port.
Like others, I found the Autoglym and Meguairs products good, but that was before they were changed....

One of the neighbours has a cat who likes to use my front garden as a toilet. I dunno what they feeds it but it absolutely stinks (that's how I end up finding the poo, rather than seeing it).

Apparently they don't like white spirit, so I might try leaving a few pots of that in its favourite parts of the garden, and there's some plastic spikey mesh stuff you can get that would stop it wandering where it shouldn't... but people (e.g. postmen) walk over the garden to get next door, rather than go back down the path (it's a bit open plan) so the spikes can't go everywhere, sadly... and the beast only does its business when I'm not around, so hiding in the bushes all night with an air-rifle has to remain a private guilty dream... 😋

Back on topic, I got a November '22 Classic and Sports Car mag from the library today, and this was in the article on their fleet MX5.

Perfect thank you. I’ve taken a screen shot and have a look at it if the one I have got is a no go x

The best solution I've found for cats wanting to get onto the roof of my 595C is these cat repellant mats. They're available on Amazon and it works like a charm. In the estate where we live the houses have silly 'Hollywood' style garages and quite a few community cats (bit of a problem in Dubai). They'll not go near my wife's Lexus but seem to gravitate towards my car and scratch the paint when climbing up onto the bonnet which drives me nuts. I too am an animal lover so shooting/poisoning etc is not an option and highly illegal here. Once they realize it's not a comfortable place to sleep anymore they seem to move on.
