yeah if you have a windows machine it miss interps the actual line speed.

i used to have a 56k modem that connected at 2mbit

I've just signed up to the 6GB cap, £22.99 per month 1MB Wanadoo broadband.

I don't leave my PC permanently switched on so I have to connect each time I turn it on. Thing is, it always connects first time! No failures - Ever!

I don't think I'm committed for a year, but if I do decide to leave them before the year is up, I do have to give my ADSL modem and line switches back! How ridiculous.

Anyways, I'm nothing but happy with Wanadoo. The quickest download time I've seen was from a site of dubious nature at 856kbps. That'll do nicely!

my bt logs on at 1.1 mbps and i get a download speed of 136k per sec off Nvidia's website.

if ur on a 1mb line and ur getting 8sumthingsumthing. then u aint on a 1mbit line try complaining lol

who told u that..... 512k run at 570kbps cos i thought my modem had wrong setting on and thought i would get seen for overclocking my modem. called them up and they said no 512 run at 570kbps. also did the same again few weeks ago when 1mb was upgraded to make sure all was ok. 1.1mbps.

1.1mbps down and 266kbps up. are the exact speed of my line tested by bt....

my post before shows the average speed not what you connect at.

so you should connect to the bt netywork at roughly 1152kb sec.

you must remember that for every 1.5KB down packet then you will send a 64KB ackonowledgement packet. That's a little under 5% so in fact you are not recieving 1.1mbit

you must remember overheads and waste packets so in fact you only get 1mbit speed. not 1.1

You can download at 136kbps? That's about 10th of 1.1MB, maybe you should try complaining!

Just because you can apparantly download at 1.1mbps or whatever, it'll only download as quick as the slowest link in the chain. You also need to take line traffic into account.

Alexb, I think you should check your units.

I do believe:

1.1Mbit = approx 136KBytes/second download speed,

For example, my 6.5-10MBit connection downloads at around 650kbytes/second up to around a Mbyte/second (although not reached this speed yet!)

If you are getting 136 download speed, that is pretty darn good imo. Mine tends to settle just a bit below that.

I am on 1Meg Pipex - a very good company, and worth checking out. NO capping either on some of their products. I wouldn't recommend AOL BB, though, imho - I prefer to stick to Explorer.
