what engine is it? sounds a lot my 1.2 16v only takes about 3.5 ltrs

And you haven't thought to check the oil before ?
it would of been over reading on the dipstick.

oh no!! 
you'll be very lucky if your oil seals havent gone. if the oil level starts to drop over time and there is no sign of a leak, its means the seals have gone. fingers crossed yours is ok.
