Don't bother with a K&N, they are really badly designed. The airflow through them is no better than with the standard filter and they let all sorts of crap through.

Do the Viper and the CDA need a pipe from the inlet to the filter or can they just be mounted directly to the inlet ? Well, they do list a piece of 70mm long pipe to go between, but surely they only get the air from the feed pipe which will be cold anyway... ?

Noticed on the BMC site that the application shot of the 1.6 kit has the filter mounted directly on the inlet.

You can mount it where you want, just as long as there is space and a cold air feed.

Mines gone in where a normal induction kit/standard air filter would go. I've taken the passenger side foglight out for now and the feed pipe for the filter sticks out there. :)

Funny that, my mate sells tuning and styling products and recommended the BMC to me. What is unclear is whether the CDA is universal? and if so is there much adjustment to fit the hgt? and above you mentioned that given the chance again you would go for the Viper - but then you said it was the same as the BMC, why is that? is it worth spending £175 more?

Just out of interest Tom how did you find out this information (dont worry im not arguing or flaming you) its just i have one and id agree that there not that good but i think my car is in need of a bit of a tune up because it didnt really run right before i put it on so i put it down to that.

But if its because K&N's are crap then ill have to think about getting a something else in the future (before the tune up).

Just excuse the way i had to put it :) ive heard lots of things about different products and they are usually biased or misinformed and just wanted to know where the info came from.

Universal does not mean 'one fits all' like the lax power 'unversal air filter'. (and I use the term filter very losely) It just means you pick the size you need and all you get in the box is the filter and nowt else.

If you look at the likes of CDA, PiperX, ITG etc.. they have a HUGE range of universal filters. The only difference between a universal and an induction kit is the addition of a set of instructions and some bits of pipe that might fit.

Yes the BMC is a universal kit made with various sized diameter pipes. They sell you the right size for your car.
However I don't like the way it all fits together, just jubilee clips which tend to come lose every week or so. Also because of the size of the filter i've had to take out the bonnet support arm thing and have to store this in the cabin until needed.
The size of the actual filter is massive and it was such a pain to physically fit, took me about 3 hours to get the thing on!
The Vipers £75. more, is made of foam so better filtration and means you should keep some of that growl! It also comes with more Samco silicone hosing rather than the cheap plastic piping with the BMC that doesn't fit very well.
The only thing that worries me about the viper is that the actual size of the filter seems a bit too small. Expicially compared to the size of the BMC one!
