Hi guys, new here. Just bought myself a fiat punto with a severe oil leak. Didn't know at the time but learnt an important lesson! Anyway, the car can go through 1 litre of oil in ten minutes and after realising this, I jacked the car up to discover that there is a severe oil leak coming from the left side of the sump. I'm not saying it's, but would like advice on where to look for this oil leak? Any ideas? Please?

Which side is the left side? Gearbox side or not?
if you dont know what your doing (dont wana sound mean but if you dont know where the gearbox is you'd best not touch the engine quite yet 
) take it to a garage tbh.

Sounds like the Gearbox side. . . (the gearbox is the passenger side of the engine bay on a right hand drive car)
Could be sump seal, corroded sump (tho these usually go on the front not the side), seal behind the flywheel (which is a gearbox out job), or a leak from higher up the engine and its running down.
Needs more investigation, as said take it to a garage or post some pics up here

I just bought the car, I can tell you where the gearbox is if i was to look at it. Thing is the oil is draining too quickly for me to get it to a garage, so I need to find the source of the leak and then see if it is feasible to repair. Any ideasb where the oil pressure switch is?
does it leak with the engine turned off?
lying under the car, feet sticking out the front - the gearbox is on your left hand side. it is bolted to the engine - you'll be able to see the look of it change as it goes engine > gearbox.
the oil pressure sensor is on the right hand side, near the front, sticking out near the oil filter.
the oil filter can corrode and leak, so if its leaking from around there then it could be the filter.
these engines also sometimes leak from the top end of the engine. follow the HT leads from spark plugs, they all go to a coil pack on the right hand side of the engine. look below that, is there lots of oil below that which is coming down the side of the engine.

Did you buy it private or trade? If it's leaking that bad, im surprised you didn't notice it before handing over your cash!
